Energy Use and Greenhouse Gas Emissions in Juneau

We all generate greenhouse gas emissions by driving our cars, taking the ferry or flying, heating our home with oil, cooking with propane, or using manufactured products or foods which require energy from fossil fuels in their production. The majority of products consumed in Juneau are shipped or flown very long distances to get here which requires significant amounts of transportation fossil fuels.

The two largest contributors to greenhouse gas emissions in Juneau are highway transportation (29%), and buildings (28%) (see Figure 2)

Most (approximately 75%) of Juneau’s energy comes from petroleum fuels, which cause 92% of our total greenhouse gas emissions. Our hydropower, which provides 20% of our energy, results in no emissions.

However, these figures understate Juneau’s total contributions of greenhouse gas emissions, because they only include energy use within the community.  They do not include the fuel required to transport goods and people in and out.  Because Juneau is so dependent on jets, ferries, and barges for supplies and personal travel, and on jets and cruise ships for tourism, we are highly dependent on fossil fuels.
