About the Assembly

The City and Borough of Juneau is a home-rule municipality. The City and Borough of Juneau Assembly consists of nine members, including the Mayor, who serves as presiding officer. Assemblymembers are elected to staggered three-year terms at the regular municipal election held each first Tuesday in October.

The Assembly establishes policy for the City Manager to implement, as CBJ operates under a “council-manager” form of government.

CBJ decisions move from an idea to draft legislation, then through public meetings to a final Assembly vote.  Public testimony is always taken at Regular and Special Assembly meetings; other meetings may not include testimony, so check the agenda on CivicClerk. To participate, attend a meeting, speak during public testimony, or email the Assembly at [email protected].

All correspondence to the Assembly is a public record under the State of Alaska Public Records Act and may be disclosed upon request. Public comment is not included in Assembly meeting packets. Assemblymembers cannot read or respond to correspondence regarding matters that are, or may become, the subject of an appeal before the Assembly.
