Now Hiring Park Maintenance Workers | $2,000 End of Season Bonus

Our Park Maintenance Division is hiring Park Maintenance Workers. If you enjoy working with your hands and being outdoors, this is your chance to get paid to upgrade, repair, and maintain Juneau’s parks, playgrounds, and sports fields all summer long. The position pays $22.08 per hour, includes a $2,000 end-of-season bonus, and runs 5 days a week from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. You’ll take on hands-on projects using power tools, machinery, and equipment to keep public spaces in great shape.

Reduced Capacity at DPAC Friday 5/30 - Sunday 6/1

Due to staffing shortages, Dimond Park Aquatic Center will have reduced capacity and limited features this weekend—Friday night, Saturday, and Sunday (May 30, 31, and June 1). The facility will be limited to an 80-person capacity, the diving board will be closed, and the red slide will remain open. Thank you for your patience and understanding—we’ll be back to full splash soon.

Hank Harmon Public Range Board seat open

The Hank Harmon Public Range Board is currently seeking applicants for an open board seat, effective immediately. If you are interested in serving on the board, please email the Hank Harmon Board. Elevator construction at Dimond Park Field House begins June 2

Starting Monday, June 2, the Dimond Park Field House will undergo a major upgrade as a new elevator is installed, with construction expected through August 31, 2025. During this time, the stairs, mezzanine, batting cage, and indoor track will be closed to the public. The Field House will remain open weekdays for Turf for Tots only, which will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Monday–Friday, starting June 4. Turf for Tots will be closed June 2 & 3 for construction setup. The facility will close daily after the program ends and remain closed on weekends. All other programs, including Open Turf, will be paused. For full schedule details, visit bit.ly/DPFHcalendar. StoryPath returns to the Seawalk June 4 – 24

CBJ Parks & Recreation is partnering with Juneau Public Libraries to bring StoryPath back to the Overstreet Park Seawalk this June. Over the course of three weeks, three books by Alaskan writers or illustrators will be featured in a series of outdoor story walks, with framed storybook pages displayed along the Seawalk for families to read as they stroll. The featured stories include Raven and the Hidden Halibut (June 4–10), adapted from a story by Tlingit Culture, Language, & Literacy students and illustrated by Nick Alan Foote; Alaska is for the Birds! (June 11–17), written by Susan Ewing and illustrated by Evon Zerbetz; and When You See Flukes (June 18–24), written by Kathy Hocker and Cheryl Cook and illustrated by Kathy Hocker. A special bonus for the first StoryPath includes an accompanying Lingít audio book, courtesy of Sealaska Heritage Institute. StoryPath encourages reading, physical activity, and outdoor exploration.

Apply for a Fourth of July Vendor Spot at Savikko Park

Vending permit applications for the Fourth of July festivities at Savikko Park are now being accepted. All permits are issued on a first-come, first-served basis. The deadline to apply is Monday, June 23 at 4:30 p.m. Learn more on the Parks & Recreation Vending Permits webpage. Applications and related material should be emailed to Recreation Supervisor Dave Pusich at [email protected].

All food vendors will be located near Treadwell Arena. There are 19 food vending spots available including a bigger space to accommodate a large food truck. For non-food vendors, there are five spots available along Savikko Road. Parks & Recreation supplies the vending space only. All other equipment – like tables, tents, and generators – must be provided by the vendor.

AGB Closure for Annual Maintenance | May 24 - June 9

Augustus G. Brown Swimming Pool will be closed for annual maintenance beginning Saturday, May 24. The facility is expected to reopen on Monday, June 9. This routine closure allows staff to perform important upkeep to ensure the facility remains safe, efficient, and ready for summer programming. We appreciate the community’s patience and understanding during this time. Dimond Park Aquatic Center will be open to the public during this time.

Outdoor Soccer Registration Now Open

Registration for CBJ Parks & Recreation’s 2025 Youth Outdoor Soccer program is now OPEN! Families can sign up online through the Parks & Rec Catalog under the "Youth and Teen" tab. Open to kids ages 5–14, the program runs for eight weeks from July through August and features one-hour practices on weeknights and games on Saturdays between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Leagues include both coed and girls’ divisions, organized by age and area; some divisions may be combined depending on registration numbers. More details about divisions and practice locations can be found on the Outdoor Soccer webpage. Early bird registration is $55 plus tax through May 18, increasing to $65 plus tax starting May 19. Children must be 5 years old by August 31 to participate. Scholarships are available—learn more and apply online.

Summer Swim Lessons Session 1 and 2

Juneau Pools’ summer swim lessons return this June with two sessions at Dimond Park Aquatic Center (DPAC) and one at Augustus G. Brown Swimming Pool (AGB). Registration opens Friday, May 9 at noon through the Parks & Rec Catalog under the "Juneau Pools" tab. No early, phone, or in-person registrations will be accepted. At DPAC, Session 1 runs June 2–12 and offers Preschool Levels 1–4 and Youth Levels 1–4; Session 2 runs June 23–July 3 and includes Preschool Levels 1–3 and Youth Levels 1–4. Both sessions take place Monday–Thursday between 8:00 and 10:45 a.m. Lessons at AGB are held June 9–July 2 on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4:10 to 6:10 p.m., and include Preschool Levels 1–3 and Youth Levels 1–4. Drop-In Pickleball & Roller Skating at Treadwell Arena

Juneau Parks & Recreation invites the community to get active and have fun at Treadwell Arena during the spring and summer cement season with two great drop-in options for all ages and skill levels. Drop-in pickleball runs Monday through Friday, May 19–June 27, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. for just $5—equipment is provided and no registration is required. Roller skating is available Wednesdays and Fridays, May 21–30, from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. for $5 + tax; just bring your own skates. More skating dates will be announced in June, so stay tuned!

Jensen-Olson Arboretum in May!

Celebrate spring at the Jensen-Olson Arboretum with a series of free, family-friendly events throughout May. Kick things off with a Mother’s Day Celebration on Saturday, May 11 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., featuring live music and light refreshments in a stunning garden setting. On Friday, May 16 from 1 to 2:15 p.m., join a Guided Garden Tour showcasing the Arboretum’s famous Primula collection. Discover Southeast Alaska’s native trees and shrubs during a Native Plant Walk on Saturday, May 25 at 11 a.m.—registration is required by emailing [email protected]. Finally, kids ages 6–12 can get hands-on with a Family Beach Exploration on Saturday, May 31 at 10 a.m.; space is limited, so register early through the Parks & Rec Catalog.

Dimond Park Field House Spring Hours

The Dimond Park Field House has updated its track and turf hours for the month of May. From May 1 to May 25, Turf for Tots will follow its regular schedule, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Track hours during this period will be Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Tuesday evenings from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., and Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Open Turf will also continue on its usual schedule—Mondays and Wednesdays from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.—through May 21. From May 27 to May 30, Turf for Tots and track access will shift to Tuesday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., with Tuesday evening track hours remaining 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. The Field House will be closed on Monday, May 26 in observance of Memorial Day. Please stay tuned for upcoming announcements regarding summer programming changes while construction is underway.

Hank Harmon Public Range Closed for Reconstruction

The Hank Harmon Public Range will close from Monday, April 28 through mid-July for major repairs and upgrades funded by a 2023 Pittman-Robertson Hunter Access Grant. No shooting is allowed during this time, and violators may face penalties. Improvements include a new dirt berm, resurfaced ranges, upgraded shooting benches, ADA access, building repairs, expanded parking, paved lot, and updated signage. The range will be open for a final weekend of public use April 25–27. During the closure, alternatives include the Juneau Gun Club for shotgun use and the Juneau Hunter Education Shooting Complex for select handgun and rifle use.

Homestead Park Closed for Reconstruction

Homestead Park in Douglas will be closed to the public for major reconstruction work beginning Monday, January 13. Construction is expected to continue into June 2025. During this closure, the park will undergo a number of improvements including replacements to the elevated wooden platforms, walkways, and stairs.
