Marine Park Rebuild
Budget: $9.8 million
Contractor: Dawson Construction
Estimated Completion: 04/01/2027
Project Overview
Marine Park Master Planning 2023: The Parks & Recreation Department worked with Coffman Engineers, Jim Brennan Associates, and PND Engineers to develop a Master Plan for Marine Park.
The planning effort began in early 2023 with an online public survey, which received over 1,000 responses. The first public meeting was held on April 27, 2023, and began in Marine Park with games and open discussion before moving to the Baranof Hotel for a slideshow presentation and additional opportunities for public input. The survey and slideshow from that meeting are posted below.
Community feedback from the survey and April meeting helped shape several concept alternatives for the park. These alternatives were shared at a second public meeting on May 24, 2023. Based on the input received, the design team finalized a Master Plan. Design development is scheduled for fall through winter, with construction planned for 2024–2025.
Spring 2025 Update:
Work on the park design has been progressing. Final 100% construction drawings were completed at the end of 2024. Bid documents are expected to be released in July 2025, with construction starting in fall 2025. Construction is anticipated to continue through the end of 2026.
February 2026 Update:
The planned rebuild of Marine Park will begin in early March 2026. Construction is expected to last through the year with estimated completion in April 2027. During this time, pedestrians will need to follow signs around the construction site. A map showing pedestrian routes is available in the Associated Documents below.
Reconstruction of Marine Park is funded entirely by Marine Passenger Fees. Based on the public input received, the final park was designed to provide a central gathering place for use in all-seasons and by all age groups, with the flexibility to allow for a variety of community events and activities. The final park will include:
- Improved pedestrian-scale LED lighting throughout the park
- An open plaza area incorporating Northwest Coast formline art by Rico Worl in decorative concrete inlays
- A dedicated stage for performances with a tensile fabric cover and lighting
- Two permanent kiosks for food vendors with lighting, water service, and hand washing sink plumbing
- A Cantilevered Pavilion shelter structure with lighting
- Permanent ADA accessible picnic tables at the Pavilion
- Bar-style seating overlooking the Juneau Seawalk
- A climbable play structure for children
- Space designated for additional totem poles in the future
- Revised landscaping throughout
