Historical Information

The earliest documented occupation was as the site of a short-lived military post named for Commander Rockwell. The hill was staked and claimed by miners as early as 1881. 1883 it was the site of the first courthouse built in 1893 and destroyed by fire in 1903. The courthouse was eventually razed in 19678 for the construction of the State Office Building.

Historic Use

Site of government structures and Juneau and Douglas Telephone Company (1915-1956).
