Historical Information

Property owned by the Carstens Brothers Packing Company of Tacoma from circa 1901 until 1957. Reportedly the first reinforced concrete building to be constructed in Juneau, it was built in 1908 for the Alaska Meat Company, managed by John Reck. Through the years other food markets have been on this site. R.J. Sommers Construction Company purchased the building in 1957. Sommers, former Surveyor General of Alaska, added the second story to the building.
