General Description

The building is a two-and-one-half story structure. It is wood frame with a hipped roof and has a full basement, concrete foundation. It is sided with wood shingles and features a small hip dormer on the front elevation and a large hip dormer at the rear. Other features include a recessed entry and a strip of four windows above the entry that are reminiscent of the Shingle Style. The hip roof and hip dormer are elements reminiscent of the Prairie School style.

Historical Information

Mr. and Mrs. Spickett built the Spickett Apartments on Fifth Street in 1916 and made their home there. John T. Spickett came to Juneau in 1896 as manager of a theatrical troupe and returned in 1898 to live. He bought and ran the Franklin Hotel and was Postmaster of Juneau from 1908-1912. Spickett opened the Orpheum Theater in 1912 and took over the Palace Theater in 1918.The Orpheum closed in June, 1917, when Spickett took over the Palace Theater on Franklin Street from Perry E. Jackson. He also operated the Dream Theater in the Opera House building for a time and continued to operate the Palace until 1929 when he retired because of poor health. Mrs. Spickett was appointed Juneau postmaster in 1926. Spickett was active in many local organizations, and was six times president of the Juneau Igloo of the Pioneers of Alaska. He was the grand president of the organization in 1925. He died at Juneau on July 31, 1932.
