Historical Information

Robert Semple, born in Michigan in 1869, came to Alaska in 1897. He established himself as an important contractor building stamp mills and canneries through southeast. In Juneau, Semple constructed the Scottish Rite Temple, a school, and installed the Juneau Lumber Mill power plant. Semple bought Lot 4 in 1907 and on it built two houses, 604 and 618 Gold. Through the years he lived at both addresses. Mr. and Mrs. Sam Guyot bought the house in 1926. Guyot was a traveling salesman, probably a wholesale grocer, who was active in Juneau by 1911. The Guyots lived at 618 Gold for many years.
