The building measures 45?x100?. It is a two-story reinforced concrete structure featuring sculptural decorative horizontal banding, vertical pilasters, cornice trim, and sculptural decorative window heads. It has a full basement and concrete foundation. Other features include a full wrap around street level canopy with divided lite transom windows above.
Historical InformationThis house was constructed for Allen Shattuck in 1933-1934. Allen and his brother Henry operated the first life insurance company in Alaska. Henry Shattuck founded the business in 1896. The company began operations in the Shattuck building when it opened on February 23, 1934 and it has operated continuously on this site for over 50 years. Hardwood inlaid floors in herring-bone design on the first floor was one of the building features noted in the local newspaper. The building also had 13 offices on the second floor.
