The one-story, wood frame building measures 30' x 43'. It has a concrete foundation and a flat roof. There is a low-rising front parapet, reconstructed front wall with storefront windows, and a wood frame storefront. Transom windows are above the canopy. Renovations in 1987 are in keeping with the original appearance including storefront windows, vertical wood siding, decorative cornice at the top of the parapet wall, and a new sidewalk canopy.
Historical InformationOriginally constructed for the Butler-Mauro Drug Company which had its beginning in Nome, Alaska. J.H. Guffy, one of the principal owners, came to Juneau to establish the business and remained to operate it for nearly fifty years. It later housed the district offices of the Federal Aviation Agency. In 1965 Gordon and Virginia Kanouse moved their business The Red Dog Saloon into the building from across the street where they had operated since 1950. The Red Dog Saloon moved again and currently (2009) the Guffy building houses the Alaskan Fur Store.
