Additional Information

General Description

The four-story wood frame building measures approximately 100' x 70'. It has a flat roof, a wood frame storefront, and horizontal siding. Double hung windows are on the upper levels. In 1944, the building was completely remodeled and a third floor was added. In 1984, a fourth floor was added. It is covered with cedar shiplap siding with contrasting trim, and awnings. The interior includes ornamental staircase; interior mall, and 3-story atrium.

Historical Information

Beginning in 1883, one of the lots covered by this building supported the Juneau Brewery owned by Abraham Cohen. Juneau Iron Works occupied the neighboring lot built in 1896. By 1914 the Juneau Brewery had closed, the Juneau Iron Works moved to 249 Front Street and the Central Hotel occupied a portion of the site. Today, the Senate Building is composed of the original Juneau Iron Works (1896) and the Central Hotel Building (1913). These were joined in 1944. It was renovated in 1984, and it presently houses commercial businesses and offices.
