Shéiyi Xaat Hít (Spruce Root House) Launches Safe Place® Program for Youth

Juneau's only 24/7 emergency youth shelter, Shéiyi Xaat Hít, has launched Safe Place® in partnership with Tlingit and Haida, first responders, and community organizations. Safe Place designates youth-friendly businesses as locations where any young person ages 10 to 17 in crisis can walk in, ask for help, and be connected with a trained shelter staff member within 30 minutes.

Look for the black and yellow signs at participating locations across Juneau, or text "safe" and your location to 44357. Celebrate the launch at the Safe Place Launch Party on Friday, June 12 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Zach Gordon Youth Center.

Playground Construction Begins at Dzantik’i Heeni School

The fields and covered play areas at Dzantik’i Heeni School will be closed from May 26 until August 19 for construction of a new playground. Construction will include excavation and other work with heavy equipment and large trucks moving through the area. The City and Borough of Juneau (CBJ) asks residents to follow posted signage and avoid the area during construction for their safety and the safety of project workers.

Once complete, the playground will include separate composite play structures for both 2–5-year-olds and 5–12-year-olds. The playground project will also include pre-k swings, a communication board and installation of perimeter fencing around the entire field area.

Marine Park Construction

After a weather-related delay, construction officially began on April 6 for the planned rebuild of Marine Park. It is expected to last through 2026 with estimated completion in April 2027. During this time, pedestrians will need to follow signs around the construction site. A map of pedestrian routes, along with information about the project, can be found at bit.ly/MarineParkProject

Reconstruction of Marine Park is funded entirely by Marine Passenger Fees, which are fees and taxes the City and Borough of Juneau (CBJ) collects from the cruise ship industry. The funds are restricted by the U.S. Constitution to projects benefitting cruise ships and their passengers.

Elevator construction at Dimond Park Field House

During the summer of 2025, the Dimond Park Field House began a major upgrade with the installation of a new elevator. Construction of the elevator has been completed; however, final integration with the building’s fire alarm system has delayed its opening. The anticipated completion date is late spring 2026.

The facility is currently operating under regular hours and programming. Thank you for your patience as we work to improve accessibility and enhance the Field House experience! For full schedule details, please visit the DPFH Calendar.

Sigoowu Ye Park Closed for Renovations

Sigoowu Ye in Lemon Creek will remain closed to the public as renovation work continues. The playgrounds Poured-In-Place surfacing installation requires a 3 to 5 day window of consistent temperatures above 50°F. The contractor performing this work is from out of state, so there is some coordination involved with travel and weather. With our cooler-than-usual spring, that window has been hard to come by, but we are watching the forecast closely and look forward to seeing it completed soon. For the safety of yourself and others, please respect the park closure and avoid all construction equipment until the project is complete and the park has reopened.
