If you are interested in obtaining a vehicle release, you must do the following:

• You must be the registered or legal owner of the vehicle.
• The vehicle must be currently registered with the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).
• You must provide proof of insurance.
• You must provide valid identification.

A vehicle release fee is required. This fee must be paid in cash, by credit card, cashier’s check, or money order, payable to the City & Borough of Juneau.

• VEHICLES HELD PAST 21 DAYS WILL BE AUCTIONED PURSUANT TO CBJ 72.23.060. THE REGISTERED OWNER WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR ALL FEES.
• No vehicles will be released without the Juneau Police Department’s release form. After payment of fees, your form will be stamped with an expiration date. If you do not pick up your vehicle by the expiration date, additional storage fees will apply. You must pay these fees at the Juneau Police Department before your vehicle will be released.
• The owner may appeal impoundment fees and costs by submitting a written request within 20 days of receiving a certified notice from the Juneau Police Department for typical impounds, or within 5 days for junked vehicles. Appeals can be sent to [email protected]. 
• Vehicles will be released during normal business hours: Mon–Fri, 8:00am–4:30pm (excluding holidays)
• After you receive your release form from the Juneau Police Department, CALL CAPITAL TOWING (907-723-7660) to arrange to pick up your vehicle.

The Juneau Police Department uses a private towing company to tow and release vehicles. Once you have obtained a vehicle release form, you will need to call the towing company to schedule an appointment to pick up your vehicle. Please note that you must have a valid driver’s license or bring a licensed driver with you when you pick up the vehicle.

If ownership has changed, you must update the vehicle record with the DMV and notify the Evidence & Property Unit. Failure to do so within the specified timeframes will result in financial responsibility remaining with you.
