Day of Play became Month of Play in 2020 and it’s here to stay! Complete do-it-yourself activities in the Passport to Play at your leisure, attend the in-person events, or do it all. All activities are free.
Passport to Play
The 2023 Passport to Play includes places to visit, answers to find, and free admission to facilities. Find more information on the various activities – including locations, tips, and hours of operation – below.
Get your Passport to Play by:
- Picking one up at the Movie in the Park on July 29
- Downloading and printing it at home beginning July 31
- Picking one up at the Parks & Recreation office beginning July 31
- Emailing us with your address and quantity needed and we will drop them in the mail
EARN TICKETS: The more activities you complete the more tickets you will earn for the prize drawing. Each activity is worth one (1) ticket.
WIN PRIZES: Pool passes, ice time, a night at the Eagle Valley Center and so much more! The prize drawing is Friday, September 1. Winners will be notified by email/phone and announced on Facebook.
Submit your Passport to Play
Passports and any applicable photos must be received by August 31, 2023 to be eligible for prizes. You may submit in one of two ways:
IN-PERSON
Bring your completed Passport to Play to Trucks N’ Stuff or to the Parks & Recreation office and choose a prize from the prize box! If you have photos to submit, you may upload them here.

ONLINE
Upload a photo of your completed Passport to Play and any applicable activity photos here and your tickets will be added to the prize drawing by Parks & Recreation staff. If a Parks & Recreation admission pass has been earned, it will be mailed to you.
In-Person Activities
Movie in the Park | Saturday, July 29
We are kicking off the Month of Play with a free Movie in the Park sponsored by Juneau Pediatric Dentistry! You can pick up a Passport to Play at the door and get your first ticket for the prize drawing that takes place on September 1. Bring your pillows, blankets, or lawn chairs and watch The Super Mario Bro. Movie (PG) on the 20′ inflatable screen on the Dimond Park Field House turf. Please note: food and drinks are not allowed, please enjoy your snack before you come in.

Sensory-Friendly Show: For those who are sensitive to the sights and sounds of a traditional movie, you are invited to a sensory-friendly showing at 1:30 p.m. (doors open at 1:15 p.m.). During this show, more lights will be left on, the volume will be much lower, and the subtitles will be on.
Community Day | Saturday, August 12
Community Day has been cancelled due to the incoming storm. Thank you for understanding.
Explore Amalga Meadows Park on Saturday, August 12 at Community Day with yard games, food and more! Juneau Park Foundation will be serving hot dogs for lunch and SAIL will open the challenge course (first-come, first-served). Be sure to stop by the Parks & Recreation tent to have your Passport stamped!

I Spy at the Library | August 19
I Spy is new this year! Stop by the Douglas Library for a game and get your Passport stamped.

Trucks N’ Stuff | August 26
Climb around an excavator, walk through a city bus, or sit in a police car! You can do all of that and more at Trucks N’ Stuff. The equipment and vehicles will be parked at Dimond Park for all to explore between 2 – 5 p.m. Look for the Parks & Recreation tent to get a stamp in your Passport to Play. If you are done, you may submit your Passport to Play during Trucks N’ Stuff and pick out a small prize from the prize bin!

New this year: Quiet Hour! If the horns and sirens are too much for you, you are invited to quiet hour from 1 – 2 p.m. for an opportunity to explore the vehicles before the horns start honking.
Do-It-Yourself Activities
StoryPath | August 1 – 9
This do-it-yourself activity is new to Month of Play, but not to Parks & Recreation! Visit a park, take a stroll and read a children’s book displayed on the railing of the Seawalk. This StoryPath features Berry Song, written and illustrated by Caldecott Medalist and Southeast Alaskan, Michaela Goade.

Parks & Trails
A few items in the Passport to Play have you exploring specific parks and trails to answer a question. For park information and locations, visit their respective webpages.
The trail to visit this year is Switzer Creek Trail in Lemon Creek. There are many entrances to the trail, the main entrance at the corner of Alaska Ave. and Sunset St. is a good place to begin. Find the trail map here.
Free Admission: Dimond Park Aquatic Center
- One (1) FREE admission at Dimond Park Aquatic Center
- Passport to Play must be presented at check-in for free admission
- Pool attendants are unable to print Passports for you, come prepared!
- Up to 2 accompanying guardians (18+) are admitted at no cost
- Children under 8 MUST be within arms reach of guardian at all times in the facility
- Check the Juneau Pools schedule for public sessions
Free Admission: Treadwell Arena
- One (1) FREE admission at Treadwell Arena
- Valid during any public skate in August, arena opens mid-month
- Passport to Play must be presented at check-in for free admission
- Up to 2 accompanying guardians (18+) are admitted at no cost
- Free admission includes skate rental, not valid for skate aids
- Rink attendants are unable to print Passports for you, come prepared!
- Check the Treadwell Arena schedule for public skate sessions
Free Admission: Dimond Park Field House
- One (1) FREE admission at Dimond Park Field House (2961 Riverside Drive)
- Valid for either Turf for Tots (ages 0-6) or track (ages 6+)
- Passport to Play must be presented at check-in for free admission
- Attendants are unable to print Passports for you, come prepared!
- Up to 2 accompanying guardians (18+) are admitted at no cost
- Guardians must supervise children at all times
- Hours of operation: Monday through Friday 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. (during the week of August 7-11, hours are 9 a.m. to noon)
Food Drive: Zach Gordon Youth Services
- Donate a minimum of one non-perishable food item and receive a stamp in your Passport to Play
- Drop-off location: Zach Gordon Youth Center, 396 Whittier Ave.
- Hours of operation:
- Monday thru Thursday 11 a.m. – 9 p.m.
- Friday 11 a.m. – 10 p.m.
- Saturday 3 p.m. – 10 p.m.
