The Life of a Skater | December 14

Inspired by Taylor Swift's show-stopping performances, "The Life of a Skater" turns Treadwell Arena into a glittering spectacle on Sunday, December 14.

Skate to her biggest hits under disco ball lighting from 6:30 – 8 p.m. Off the ice, get crafty at the Friendship Bracelet Making Station, trading custom-made creations with fellow fans. The evening culminates in the spectacular Taylor Swift Look-Alike Contest—dress as your favorite era for a chance to win a prize! Register online in advance to secure your spot; regular admission rates apply. Registration opens on Thursday, December 4 at noon and is limited to 150. Walk-in registration at the door is available up to the maximum capacity of 200. Skate rental is included; first come, first served.

Candy Cane Hunt 2025

The 2025 Candy Cane Hunt is almost here! Join Parks & Recreation for a merry scavenger hunt that supports local businesses, spreads seasonal cheer, and gives you tons of chances to win big! Starting December 1, download your Candy Cane Tracker from the Candy Cane Hunt webpage, then bundle up and search for candy cane numbers hidden all around town from December 3–17. The more numbers you find, the more tickets you’ll earn in the prize drawing—filled with fantastic donations from generous local businesses! And that’s not all… many participating shops are offering special discounts and treats to Candy Cane Hunters who show their tracker. Plus, keep an eye out for the giant candy canes decorating CBJ facilities—snap a selfie with each one to score bonus entries in the drawing!

Juneau Pools Lifeguard Training Class Starting Late December

Juneau Pools is hiring lifeguards for part-time positions—and offering a new training opportunity at the end of this month. Registration is now open for the December 2025 Juneau Pools lifeguarding class, where participants who successfully complete the program will earn an American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification valid for two years. Register online via the Parks and Rec registration catalog by 12 p.m. on Tuesday, December 23. The course runs Sunday, December 28 through Wednesday, December 31, with sessions held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Augustus Brown Swimming Pool and Dimond Park Aquatic Center. Class fees are $250, but the course is free for those who submit a Juneau Pools lifeguard job application during the session.

All participants must complete a pre-course swim session prior to the start of class. The pre-course includes a 200-yard swim, a 10-foot brick retrieval, and a 2-minute tread. Prerequisites must be completed by December 24, and participants must be at least 15 years old by the final day of the class.

Ugly Sweater Skate | December 21

Break out your most festive (and tacky!) holiday sweater and join us for the Ugly Sweater Skate at Treadwell Arena. Wear an ugly sweater and enjoy free admission to this cheerful community skate from 6:30-8 p.m. on Sunday, December 21. (Regular admission still applies to people without sweaters.)

Celebrate the season with friends and family on the ice—whether your sweater is sparkly, quirky, or downright outrageous. Skate rentals are included on a first-come, first-served basis. Come enjoy a fun and festive night at the rink! 🎄⛸️

Movie in the Park | Lilo & Stitch | December 27

Join Juneau Parks & Recreation for a special Movie in the Park at Treadwell Arena! Lace up your skates—or enjoy the show from the bleachers—as we present “Lilo & Stitch (2025)” (PG) on Saturday, December 27. Doors open at 3:15 p.m. and the movie begins at 3:30 p.m. This event is generously sponsored by Coastal Helicopters, who will also be providing prizes.

Ice capacity is limited to 125 skaters. Regular admission rates apply (passes accepted) and include skate rental on a first-come, first-served basis. Bleacher seating is free, but remember to dress warmly. Food and drinks are welcome off the ice, and popcorn will be available for purchase. Enjoy a fun winter movie experience with family and friends!

Youth Basketball Registration is Open

Registration for Parks & Recreation’s Youth Basketball (ages 6-14) is open through Saturday, December 20 at 5:00 p.m. As of December 5, space is available in the 8/9 Girls and 12/14 Coed divisions. Registration cost is $65 + tax  which includes the $10 late fee that began on November 25. Scholarships are available: apply online.

A pre-season clinic will be offered to registered players on December 20 at Dzantik’i Heeni and the season runs January 5 – March 7, 2026. Kids will practice once a week for one hour. Games will take place on Saturday between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Elevator construction at Dimond Park Field House

On June 2, the Dimond Park Field House began a major upgrade with the installation of a new elevator. Construction is now expected to be completed by the end of November. Open Turf, Chair Yoga, and Private Party Rentals have resumed, and the mezzanine, batting cage, and indoor track are open to the public. Sigoowu Ye Park Closed for Renovations

Homestead Park Closed for Reconstruction

Homestead Park in Douglas will be closed to the public for major reconstruction work beginning Monday, January 13. Construction is expected to continue into June 2025. During this closure, the park will undergo a number of improvements including replacements to the elevated wooden platforms, walkways, and stairs.
