Project Overview

Chicken Yard Park is located on Starr Hill on the corner of Sixth Street and Kennedy Street. A community meeting was held on January 22, 2020 at Holy Trinity Church to receive input and ideas from the public on what should be improved at the park. We will be developing a concept for the park improvements based on all the feedback received. Chicken Yard Park is a unique and well-loved space, surrounded by a passionate and tight knit neighborhood and community. Construction is planned for Summer 2020.

PROJECT UPDATE 6/16/2020

Since the January 22 public meeting, PDC Engineers and Corvus Design have put together a set of construction documents for improvements at Chicken Yard Park. Some key features of the plan for construction this year are:

  • New hill slide using the existing slope
  • Benches and landscaping around the new (private) parking spaces
  • New basketball hoop relocated to the south corner of the park
  • Resurfacing and regrading of existing park

Juneau Park Foundation has provided $7,500 of funds to be matched dollar for dollar in order to enhance the project. If you want more information, you can contact Ian Fisk at (907) 209-2657 or John Pugh at (907) 723-3831.

PROJECT UPDATE 1/22/2021

Admiralty Construction was the successful bidder on the project and will begin construction in spring of 2021.

PROJECT UPDATE 4/22/2021

Admiralty Construction will begin work on Chicken Yard Park around May 15, 2021. Anticipated hours of work are 7:00 am to 5:00 pm Monday to Friday and 8:00 am to 5:00 pm Saturday.

PROJECT UPDATE 5/14/2021

Construction for the Chicken Yard Park Improvements Project is scheduled to begin Monday, May 17, and wrap up at the end of June. The park will be closed for use during this time, though the community garden will be accessible for public use. Please use caution in this area and follow all traffic control and signage.

The project will begin with the mobilization of equipment and demolition of existing park features. Improvements include asphalt pavement, removal and replacement of the wood retaining wall, new playground equipment, new fencing, site furnishings, and landscaping.

Anticipated hours of work are Monday to Friday 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

PROJECT UPDATE 9/28/2021

The contractor has completed the placement of all of the precast concrete blocks for the new retaining wall. The crew is working on backfilling behind the wall and installing the storm drain system. Next the crew will be working on installing a concrete curb along the edge of the wall and preparing the driveway and parking areas to be paved.

The project has a new completion date of November 1, 2021. This will allow the contractor time to finish the driveway and parking areas and to work on other items (installation of the basketball hoop, bollards, chain link fence, trash can, benches, landscaping, backfilling around stairs, and other miscellaneous items).
