FAQs for JNU Residents

What counts? This is a pretty common question! Walk Southeast miles are:
Intentional walks, runs, and hikes
Treadmill and elliptical miles
Wheelchair miles
Do not include:
Daily step count (or mileage converted from a step count)
Bike rides, paddling/rowing activities, swimming, skiing, etc.

Juneau residents have two tracking methods to choose from:
  1. My Virtual Mission App: The My Virtual Mission app allows you to connect a fitness tracker (Runkeeper, Garmin, Apple, or Fitbit) which will automatically add your miles to the challenge. Please note, participants using the app must be at least 12 years old, have their own device, and register for their own My Virtual Mission account. Watch this video to learn how to register for Walk Southeast and set up your My Virtual Mission account.
  2. Paper Mileage Tracker: The paper mileage tracker can be printed or downloaded to check off the boxes for each mile you walk. You can also choose the other side which has a log to write where you went and keep a running total.

Trackers, regardless of how far you made it, must be submitted by September 2 to be eligible for the prize drawings. Click on the applicable button below to get started.

If you are a resident of Juneau, submit your tracker here:

Watch this how-to video to learn about registering for Walk Southeast and setting up your My Virtual Mission account.

Instructions for setting up your My Virtual Mission app, joining the mission, and connecting your fitness tracker (Runkeeper, Garmin, Apple, or Fitbit) are provided at the time of registration. Check your email (or junk folder) for the receipt/confirmation from Parks & Recreation and look for the attachments. The How-To PDF includes all the details you need.

The Walk Southeast challenge in My Virtual Mission is ‘private’ which means you won’t be able to find it just by searching. You must have the link provided at registration. Once you request to join, we are notified and will confirm your registration within 48 hours.

You can set up your account, join the mission, and connect your tracker before May 1. Get set-up early! Even though Walk Southeast begins on May 1, you cannot add miles to the app until you are approved. For example, if you don’t join the app until May 10, you will not be able to add miles for walks done between May 1-9.

One more thing to note, Walk Southeast registration closes on May 7 and you will have until May 12 to join MVM. If you miss the deadline, we will transfer your registration over to the paper tracker and email you a copy of it.

My Virtual Mission & Apple

Apple will only upload workouts to MVM (i.e. walks, runs, hikes). The ‘important points’ shown on the ‘MVM Connections’ page do not apply to Walk Southeast. Accumulated steps do NOT post automatically every 24 hours and you do NOT need to have MVM open in the background. When you connect Apple to MVM and use your watch to track a ‘workout’, it will automatically post the distance immediately following your walk.

The ‘local’ prize drawing is just for our Juneau residents. Prizes include a one-night stay at the hard-to-get Amalga Cabin, cool swag from Trail Mix, Inc., great gear from Nugget Alaskan Outfitter or a gift certificate to Western Auto Marine. The drawing will take place on September 8 and winners will be notified by phone/email and announced on Facebook.

To be eligible for prizes, participants using the paper tracker must submit a copy of it by September 2. No action is required for MVM users.

Tickets for the ‘local’ drawing are based on the community you reach by September 1. The more you walk, the more chances you have to win!

  • Auke Bay, 12 miles = 1 ticket
  • Gustuvas, 83 miles = 2 tickets
  • Skagway, 104 miles = 3 tickets
  • Petersburg, 163 miles = 5 tickets
  • Wrangell, 208 miles = 8 tickets
  • Ketchikan, 297 = 12 tickets

These tickets are for the ‘local’ drawing only. Details and eligibility requirements for the Alaska Airlines drawing for two-round trip tickets can be found in the Community Challenge section.

When you reach these communities along your virtual trek, you can check in to earn a bonus ticket for the ‘local’ prize drawing by submitting a photo from a recent walk or hike. Ready to check in? Click on the community you have reached to get started.

If you are using a paper Mileage Tracker, you will also need to submit an image of it to earn your bonus ticket.

Community Challenge

Which community will walk the most miles this summer? Juneau, Petersburg, Wrangell and Ketchikan will all be aiming for the title.
