The Museum could not keep the doors open without the hard work and dedication of our volunteers.  We offer volunteers who have contributed at least 20 hours per year the following tokens of appreciation.

There are many ways to help out at the Juneau-Douglas City Museum. Find a job that’s right for you.

Visitor Services: Individually or in two-person teams, welcome visitors, take admissions, answer questions, and staff the Museum Store. October-April, volunteers may also assist with education tours or clerical projects as available.  Visitor services volunteers should be friendly, customer-service oriented, and interested in learning about and discussing Juneau history. Requires basic computer skills, cash handling, and good customer service. Requires cash register training with the Museum Administrative Assistant. Weekly or bi-monthly shifts available. Positions available now.

Docent Services: Docents welcome visitors and lead small guided tours through the Museum’s galleries providing interpretation and history.

Walking Tour Guides:  Historic Downtown Juneau Walking Tour: Take visitors on a trip into Juneau’s past by leading the Historic Downtown Juneau Walking Tour. Learn about the notable places, people, and architecture of downtown Juneau, including the stories of the Birdman of Alcatraz and China Joe. Capitol Tours: Show visitors the interior of the Capitol and learn about the building’s architecture, the art collection, the Alaska Legislature, and some of the people who helped to shape Alaska’s political history. This position requires tour guide training and a three month commitment to lead a weekly tour.  May-September only.

Special Receptions: Assist staff with greeting and counting visitors who attend special events. May also assist with setting up chairs or equipment, serving refreshments, keeping galleries tidy, selling Museum Store items, and answering questions. Evenings only, October-April.
