MARCH 25, 1899-A. P. Swineford, who served as the second governor of Alaska, was elected Exalted Ruler of B. P. O. E. No. 420 at its meeting last night.

APRIL 8, 1899-On Monday night, Alaska Lodge No. 1, Knights of Pythias, was instituted in this city. Officers include L. L. Blumenthal, A. C. Van Doren, John F. Malony, M. Wangenheim, B. M. Behrends, G. E. James and A. M. Ross.

APRIL 22, 1899-George Bach has sold the old Webster mine and mill on Basin Road and it will henceforth be known as the Humboldt Mining Company. It is the intention of the new company to increase the mill from five to ten stamps. About 100 tons of ore are now on the dump and will be run through the mill first. The company plans to employ about 20 men.

Robert Duncan, Jr. superintendent of the Treadwell mines, died on April 14 at Phoenix, Arizona, where he had gone for his health. He had been ill since last fall.

APRIL 29, 1899-Extensive changes are being planned at the Sheep Creek properties of the American Gold Mining Company. Several hundred feet of new tunnel have been driven in the Silver Queen and Glacier mines and a steam railway will run directly into the mines. This will eliminate the aerial tram which now carries ore from the mines to the railroad. The mill will also be rebuilt. All of the present vanners will be moved to a new vanner house on the beach and the pulp from the stamp mill will be carried to them in a covered flume.

J. P. Jorgenson continues to add new equipment to his shop and now has one of the most complete planing mills in the Pacific Coast. Other equipment includes a rip saw, cutoff saw, turning lathe, band saw, dado head and shaper, and sanding machine. All are operated by a 24-inch Tuttle water motor. Jorgenson carries the largest stock of lumber, house finishing and building hardware in Alaska. His shop is on Front Street next door to the C. W. Young Company.

MAY 6, 1899-Within a day or two the new 300 stamp mill will be operating at Treadwell. Ore is now being conveyed to the mill which alone will crush nearly 1,000 tons of ore a day.

John G. Heid has been elected president of the Juneau Public Library Association, with C. J. Larson as vice president, H. G. Gurr, secretary, and B. M. Behrends, treasurer.
