Hose Houses Erected for Fire Company

JANUARY 28, 1895-Half a dozen parties are placer mining along Gold Creek this winter and are making fair wages.

Willis Thorp has announced that he is now the sole owner of the Alaska Electric Light & Power Company, F. D. Kelsey having served his connection with the firm.

Both companies of the Juneau Fire Association have turned out for drills this past week. Foreman of the Company No. 1 is J. P. Jorgenson. J. P. Whitney is foreman of Company No. 2. Also during the week two hose houses were erected, one adjoining the law office of Johnson and Heid at Third and Seward Streets, the other, for Company No. 1, adjoining E. Valentine?s store on Front Street.

Heavy snow has broken down the electric wires near St. Ann?s Hospital.

FEBRUARY 4, 1895-Stockholders of the Alaska Mexican Gold Mining Company propose to add 60 stamps to the mill this year, according to Superintendent Robert Duncan, Jr.

The Rev. John Althoff will soon leave Alaska after 16 years. He first came north to Wrangell in 1879 and moved to Juneau in 1885 were he selected a site and cleared the ground for a church.

The newly organized Midwinter Club gave its first entertainment at the Opera House Thursday evening. The program included recitations, vocal and instrumental solos, and several songs by a male quartet.

Sneak thieves are appearing among us. There have been several thefts reported at Douglas and during the past week a sluice box on Gold Creek belonging to James Elwell and partners was robbed of an estimated $75 in gold dust.

A cottage of Sixth Street owned by J. M. Davis and occupied by Dr. H. A. Hofste caught on fire Saturday night and despite the best efforts of the firemen was totally destroyed. Dr. and Mrs. Hofste were visiting in Sitka and lost all their possessions except what they had with them. The Davises loss is about $900.
