Unusually Warm January Melts Snow

JANUARY 5, 1893-During the past year there were 244 criminal cases tried in the Justice of the Peace court in Juneau. Of these, 58 were discharged, 24 held for grand jury, and 162 convicted and either sentenced or fined. A total of $486 was collected in fines, an average of $3 for each conviction.

There will be an ice cream social at the Log Cabin Church on the evening of Friday the 13th.

Emery Valentine was blown down by a Taku gust the other day and suffered a sprained ankle.

At the Opera House, the entertainment ?Ripples? by Crystal and Monte Snow was well received and was followed by ?The Creole,? a drama by the Snow Company, with Mr. and Mrs. George T. Snow, William and Edward Webster, J. A. Snow and William Best.

JANUARY 12, 1893-The Longfellow Literary Society on Tuesday evening held a debate on the subject, ?Is woman the superior of man?? The affirmative won, with a jury of one woman and two men.

The market is presently well stocked with fresh halibut and cod.

During the recent heavy rains, Gold Creek rose four feet, greatly handicapping the placer miners who have worked all winter along the lower part of the creek.

The City of Topeka brought in a dozen men who are enroute to the Yukon gold fields.

J. J. McGrath has leased his Juneau City Hotel to George Miller.

JANUARY 19, 1893-An unusually warm spell of weather, with temperatures in the 50s, has caused most of the ice to melt along Gold Creek and the snow to disappear from the mountains.

The Alaska Mexican gold mine, adjacent to the Treadwell, is partly owned by the Exploration Company of London, which is offering 40,000 shares of stock at one pound two shillings per share. Total capitalization is a million dollars, divided into 200,000 shares. President of the company is William Alvord of the Bank of California. A trial run of 450 tons of ore from the Mexican in the Treadwell mill yielded $7 a ton. Captain Thomas Mein, mining engineer, believes the erection of a 60-stamp mill is warranted.
