Juneau Observes First Decoration Day

MAY 5, 1892-At a Democratic caucus here, A. K. Delaney, J. F. Malony, Willis Thorp, B. M. Behrends and O. W. Ashby were elected delegates to the territorial convention.

Juneau is to have a new court house after a struggle of several years. C. W. Young is reported to have secured the contract for its construction.

MAY 12, 1892-The new District Judge, Warren Truitt, opened a term of court here on Monday. This was his first term of court in Alaska.

The road to Evergreen Cemetery is nearly completed.

Superintendent William Ebner of the Eastern Alaska Mining & Milling Company is expected on the next boat and will start up the company?s mill as soon as possible.

The Nowell Gold Mining Company has a crew at work in Silver Bow Basin, getting ready to start hydraulic operations as soon as the snow disappears.

MAY 19, 1892-The tourist season is now opening as briskly as it has in past years. The Mexico, which arrived yesterday, had only six round trip passengers. She went from Juneau to Berners Bay to land machinery for the Nowell Gold Mining Company.

In Silver Bow Basin, the Nowell Gold Mining Company has started one of its two hydraulic giants and will start the second one soon. Teams are being kept busy hauling supplies.

MAY 26, 1892-The garden near Sheep Creek known as Joe Defoe?s ranch is for rent or sale.

Teams of the Nowell Gold Mining Company are busy hauling riffle blocks for use in the big sluice box which runs through the tunnel from Silver Bow Basin.

JUNE 2, 1892-Juneau?s first observance of Decoration Day was on the 30th. There was a parade which started at Second and Seward and marched up Main Street to the old cemetery at the top of the hill, where there were speeches and ceremonies. Governor Lyman E. Knapp was parade marshal and John McKinnon, who was a member of the color guard which raised the flag at Sitka in 1867, was color bearer. Marching in the parade were the Juneau City brass band, Company A of the Alaska Militia, Veterans of the Mexican War, the Grand Army of the Republic and other veterans of the late war, Sons of Veterans, the Chaplain, Poet of the Day, Orators of the Day, civil authorities, and the school children of both Juneau and Douglas.

Juneau?s barbers have given notice that henceforth they will close on Sundays at 2 p. m.
