Log Cabin Church Adds a Belfry

JUNE 11, 1891-Last week the Juneau Brass Band serenaded Douglas City, after which the citizens of that town irrigated the band members and this was followed by a dance until a late hour.
The Douglas City public school closed Friday after a session of nine months. Mrs. Sadie Adams was the teacher. The average attendance was 21.
Members of the U. S. District Court party and others made an excursion trip to the Takou glaciers last Saturday on the steamer Chilkat, Captain Charles Carlson. There were 33 in the party, guests of H. M. Murry of the Chilkat Packing Company.
The Juneau public school closed yesterday with a picnic on Basin Road, given by the teacher Miss Lee. She does not plan to return here next fall.
Messrs. Miller and Lindig have leased the Reed House on Second Street and changed the name to Central House. It is one of the oldest hotels in Juneau.
JUNE 25, 1891-The ten stamps for the Silver Queen Mining Company mill on Sheep Creek are now in place. The mill will be operated by water power from the creek. For the time being, ore will be carried from the mine to the mill by wagon but it is planned to install a track tram.
The Log Cabin Church now has a log belfry with a cross on top.
The government has leased the Brady Building on Second Street for use as a court house.
Last Tuesday evening Company A of the Alaska Militia gave a military ball at the Opera House and on the same evening there was a public dance at the Phoenix Music Hall.
JULY 2, 1891-The Juneau Athletic Club will give an ice cream carnival at the Opera House tomorrow evening. Entertainment will be offered, with a general admission of 25 cents.
All the local mining companies will close down for the Fourth of July. The program for the day includes band music, reading of the Declaration of Independence, races and other contests, an Indian canoe race and a tug-of-war between teams from Juneau and Douglas City.
The Eastern Alaska Mining & Milling Company mill in Silver Bow Basin is now running.
The Ashby and Leak Hall on the waterfront has been completed and there will be a grand opening dance tomorrow night.
