Sheep Creek Road Construction Under Way

APRIL 10, 1890-The ladies of Douglas City will give a basket social at Cohen?s Hall to raise funds to build a sidewalk to Douglas school No. 1.

Work has commenced on the construction of a road to Sheep Creek. The work is being paid for by mine owners and Juneau businessmen. The mines there show great promise and a road will be a great convenience.

APRIL 17, 1890-M. J. Cohen & Co. is now manufacturing the ?Alaska Belle? cigar.

The rush to the Yukon is not as great as in some previous years. Nearly all who went in this spring have been there before and have great faith in the future of the country.

Dr. H. S. Wyman, M. D., is advertising his new Surgical Clinic Sanitorium which is complete with vapor, hot air, sulphur and electric baths. His office hours are 9 a.m. to noon, 1 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

Dr. W. E. Bergman, M. D., has his office in the Curry Building near the corner of Second and Gold Streets.

APRIL 24, 1890-Frank Bach of Douglas City plans to start a branch store at Sheep Creek this summer. The mines of that area are attracting more and more attention.

St. Ann?s School closed for one week for Easter vacation.

Willoughby Clark, pioneer Alaska lawyer, plans to locate at Douglas City.

The Franklin Hotel, John Olds and Morris Orton, proprietors, advertises board and lodging at $7 a week.

MAY 8, 1890-George Steller is refitting the Arctic Billiard Parlor in a pleasant and tasty manner.

The Basin is covered with three feet of snow but a few days of the present weather will clear it away and the placer miners can go to work.

The road to Sheep Creek is now nearly completed. It has been built by a subscription of businessmen and miners.

The Douglas City sawmill is running full force and is producing, among other items, shakes and battens for local use.
There is now an abundance of water in the Treadwell ditch which extends from the mine to the north end of the island. It is probable that there will not be another water shortage before next winter. Meanwhile, the big mill is running and concentrates are again accumulating. It is the intent of the company to build more reverberatory furnaces.
