Sparring Match Set for Christmas

DECEMBER 5, 1889-A fire was started a few days ago in the new reverberatory dechloridizing furnace recently added to the Alaska Mill & Mining Company?s plant at Treadwell. The stamp mill was shut down for several days last week while repairs were made to the water wheel. Meanwhile, the steamer Elder has discharged several hundred tons of coal at the company dock and the steam plant can now operate. Mr. W. P. Corbus, manager of the company?s mercantile branch went below on the Elder for a winter?s vacation.
Corporal Curry will be pleased to see his friends at his sample rooms on Second Street.
DECEMBER 12, 1889-It is gratifying to learn that a term of the District Court has been ordered convened at Juneau on or about January 8.
The Silver Bow Basin Mining Company now has a telephone connection from its town office to the Basin. This is the second phone line to the Basin.
Last Tuesday an Indian policeman discovered a hoochinoo still below Sheep Creek and captured the distiller of the vile concoction.
Martin Angel has sold the Senate Saloon in Juneau to Mr. Chapman.
The melodrama ?Kathleen Mavoureen? or ?St. Patrick?s Eve? will be placed on the boards at the Opera House by the Snow family, assisted by Byrd Brydges, M. C. Muller, Ed Webster, Mr. Chapman and others. This will be the first entertainment given by George T. Snow since his return from the Yukon.
DECEMBER 19, 1889-There will be a Christmas tree at the Opera House on Christmas Eve for the little ones of Juneau. Songs and recitations will be a feature of the entertainment, following which Santa Claus will distribute presents.
The patronage of George Chopat?s circulating library is rapidly increasing.
Our butcher, Mr. Thorp, returned on the steamer City of Topeka bringing with him a large number of turkeys from Nebraska to supply the holiday demand.
At Douglas on Christmas afternoon a sparring match is to take place in the dance hall of Joe Le Deu between Bob Insley and Pt Moran for the gate receipts and between J. C. Ross and T. Coughlin for $50.
DECEMBER 26, 1889-Both the Alaska Mill & Mining Company on Douglas Island and the Silver Bow Basin Mining Company on Gold Creek closed down for 24 hours as a Christmas holiday.
Charles Goldstein and his bride will soon move into their residence on Third Street.
The government school house in Douglas City is nearly completed.
