News of the Gold Camp - 05/28/1980
JULY 11, 1889-After consultation with engineers, the Nowell Gold Mining Company has abandoned the construction on its proposed 11,000-foot tramway because of the danger of snowslides carrying away many of the towers. Another mill site is being sought closer to the mines. Thomas S. Nowell has also purchased placer ground at Silver Bow Basin from what is known as Frenchman?s Ground to Ice Gulch, rimrock to rimrock and containing about 100 acres. He has also purchased water rights on Gold Creek, Granite Creek and the creek in Ice Gulch, about 2,000 miner?s inches in all. Water from Granite Creek will be used for hydraulic lines for two giants. They will have four inch nozzles with 250 feet of head. A tunnel site has been located and is now being surveyed by George Garside. It will be at least 8 by 8 feet and about 2,000 feet through bedrock to tap the basin at a depth of 85 to 90 feet below the present workings. The compressor used at the Alaska Union mine on Douglas Island will be brought over to run the drills.
