Frame Buildings Replace Most Log Cabins

AUGUST 13, 1887-The mill of the Johnson Mill & Mining Company, near the Webster mill on Gold Creek, is now running full blast, working ore from the Taku Union lodes.

John Heid?s law office on Seward Street is nearing completion and likewise Judge Stanford?s building opposite the Coon Drug Store.

Hart & Co. received on the Idaho a magnificent chandelier and footlights for the Opera House. ?The Wizards of the Northwest? is now playing there, featuring the Snow Company.

The avalanche of snow and ice that raised havoc with some of the cabins at the head of Silver Bow Basin has not yet melted away, much to the vexation of those whose placer claims are buried beneath it.

AUGUST 20, 1887-Machinery for the mill of the Alaska Union Mining Company, owned by the Nowell family, has now been landed on their wharf, recently constructed by Frank Starr. The place is north of Juneau on Douglas Island and is becoming known as Union City or New Boston.

The log cabins of the pioneers are fast being replaced by substantial frame buildings. Soon every lot in town will have a building on it.

SEPTEMBER 3, 1887-G. B. Johnson, who last year taught in the school at Killisnoo, will be in charge of the schools here this year. Dr. F. F. White, who taught here last year, will teach the newly opened school at Haines. Professor Johnson informs us that both the Indian and white schools here will open next Monday, the 5th. He will teach the white school and Miss Jensen the Indian school.

SEPTEMBER 10, 1887-The Treadwell mine shipped $118,000 in gold on the Olympia, the product of 27 days? run of the mill.

The Juneau Fire Association will give a dance in the Opera House on the 14th to raise funds. Tickets are $1.

A new business building is going up on Seward Street, just below the Coon Drug Store. Colonel Richard Dixon is the owner.

Sanders and Garside have made a rich strike in their Jumbo mine at Silver Bow Basin. This is the property that has produced the ore for the burro train during the past summer.
