Cornet Band Makes Debut

MARCH 19, 1887-?French Pete? Erussard has been busy for the past week shoveling snow off his garden patch preparatory to putting in his spring crops. Last year he furnished local residents with fine vegetables and he says he will do the same this year unless it snows faster than he can shovel.

MARCH 26, 1887-The schooner Onyx has arrived with a load of lumber from the sawmill at Shakan, consigned to C. W. Young. She was towed into port by the Marion after having been on the rocks at Taku Inlet for the past two weeks. She is somewhat damaged but can be repaired. The Onyx was built at Shakan a couple years ago to carry lumber from the mill to its various customers.

APRIL 2, 1887-Yesterday E. H. Boggs came up from his sawmill at Sheep Creek and reports that he will soon start the wheels turning.

The Alaska Cornet Band made its first appearance on the streets of Juneau yesterday and rendered some very good music.

A new advertisement is that of Decker Bros., General Merchandise, ?three doors above the wharf.?

APRIL 9, 1887-The regular meeting of the Juneau Literary Society was held at the courthouse Tuesday evening.

The Indians are now supplying the local market with halibut at 100 pounds for $1.50 and herring at 25 pounds for 50 cents.

Word has been received of the confirmation of Arthur K. Delaney as Collector of Customs for Alaska. He is a man of 46, born in New York State but a resident of Wisconsin for many years. He has practiced law, served in the Wisconsin assembly, served in the State Senate, as county Superintendent of Schools and as U. S. Attorney for the eastern district of the state, a position he resigned to take the present appointment. In 1884 he was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention and helped to nominate President Cleveland.
-Frank Nowell?s ranch, about a mile north of town, now has a fine barn and six milk cows.
-The filthiest nuisance that roams our streets is a large gang of hogs. As they continue to run at will, it becomes more apparent that we need some kind of city government.
