MARCH 15, 1903-Two large parties of Atlin Indians arrived here last evening, laden with furs which they will trade here. The two parties traveled together as far as the mouth of the Taku River. They then split up and made a race of it to see which could reach Juneau first. One bunch came over a pass in the mountains and down Silver Bow Basin and Gold Creek Valley. The other party took to canoes and came around Point Bishop and up the channel. The mountain climbers reached the city a full hour ahead of those who came by water.
MARCH 7, 1914-Late last evening the rock crushers began grinding ore for the first time in the pilot mill of the Alaska Juneau Mining Company on the side of Mount Roberts, just south of the city limits. The 40 stamps in the pilot mill are being started today. Operation of the mill was to have begun on March 4 but a slide on the Gold Creek side of the mountain held up the first ore train from the mine. F. W. Bradley is president of the company, R. A. Kenzle is general superintendent and G. C. James is superintendent of the mill. Construction of a larger mill will commence if the tests in the pilot plant are successful.
JUNE 25, 1946-Dr. D. D. Marquardt of Springfield, Oregon, has signed a lease for space in the Klein Building where he plans to open an office for the practice of optometry. He has recently been associated with Binyon Optometrists in Tacoma.
AUGUST 23, 1947-HMS Kenya, British warship carrying 618 officers and men is visiting Juneau and is tied up at the Alaska Juneau Gold Mining Company dock. Also in the harbor are the U. S. S. Nereus, submarine tender, and four U. S. Navy submarines.
JULY 1, 1948-George A. Parks is now vice president of the First National Bank of Juneau. Parks retired yesterday as Regional Cadastral Engineer of the U. S. Public Survey Office and was elected to his new position at a meeting of the bank?s board of directors on June 18. He has been a director of the bank for a number of years.
JULY 24, 1948-John Jensen last night walked away with a decisive ?Old Woodenface? win over Peter Dyer , the Seattle champion, who is visiting Juneau. Jensen tagged the wooden umpire for four strike-outs in the first heat and five in the second to win over Dyer by a 9-7 margin. Earlier in the month Jensen struck out ?Old Woodenface? five times in the first contest of its kind held in Alaska. He was followed by Albert Carlson in second place and Elton Engstrom in third.
MAY 1, 1950-A total of 67 halibut vessels have taken on ice and bait at the Juneau Cold Storage during the past three days and sailed for the fishing grounds for the opening of the season. Many of the boats hail from Hoonah and Angoon.
