SEPTEMBER 16, 1923-A leaded stained glass window will be presented to Holy Trinity Cathedral at Juneau next summer by two sisters, Jessie and Carrie Van Brunt of New York. The design will depict Mount McKinley and will be named ?Denali,? which means ?Big Chief.?
JULY 27, 1945-Sale of the Feldon Apartments on Calhoun Avenue at Fourth Street to Mr. and Mrs. Joe Kendler was announced today by Mr. and Mrs. Sam Feldon.
MAY 23, 1947-Edwin C. Clark has accepted the position as head of the Juneau Public Schools to succeed A. B. Phillips who is retiring from teaching. Clark comes to Juneau from Balboa Heights, Canal Zone, where he has been with the Department of Education.
JULY 1, 1947-The Harbor Market, established by Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Nygaard more than eight years ago, has changed hands effective today. Lewis G. McDonald, who has been associated with Bert?s Cash Grocery for the past three and a half years, has taken over the management of the grocery and meat store.
JULY 12, 1947-Negotiations completed yesterday resulted in the re-entry of Henry Messerschmidt into the business operated for many years by his family under the name San Francisco Bakery but now known as the Purity Bakery, Inc. Last year Henry and his brother George Messerschmidt sold the San Francisco Bakery to grocerymen Bert McDowell and Marshall Erwin, who changed the name to Purity Bakery. Now Henry Messerschmidt has joined with Levi Hunsaker to purchase the McDowell-Erwin interest. Hunsaker has been operating the bakery for the past year.
AUGUST 2, 1947-Elroy Fleek and Jake Hendricks have announced a new Juneau-Douglas bus service, utilizing a new Beck 37-passenger mainliner bus with engine in the rear. The new line will be known as Capital City Trailways. The company?s Juneau stand will be on South Seward Street near the Teenage Club. It is planned to have 13 round trips a day between the two towns, commencing at 7:15 a.m. and ending at midnight.
JUNE 14, 1948-The new steamship Prince George of Canadian National Steamships was in port here yesterday on her maiden voyage and is carrying a party from the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce. The ship, the second Canadian National steamer to bear that name, berthed at the Northland dock. Captain E. B. Caldwell is master of the 350-foot vessel and A. H. ?Bert? Robison is purser. She is the largest ship ever built on the Canadian west coast and has accommodations for 294 first class and 28 second class passengers, with a crew of 132.
JANUARY 1, 1949-After 51 years of underground mining Arthur Riendeau retired today as Mine Superintendent of the Alaska Juneau Mine. He had worked for the Alaska Juneau for 26 years and had previously worked at the Treadwell, Jualin, Apex el Nido and Ebner mines in this area. A native of Republic, Michigan, he started work in an iron mine when 19 and came north to the Klondike in 1899.
JANUARY 3, 1949-Richard E. Garrison was badly bruised but miraculously escaped serious injury this morning when he was caught under a 40-marquee which crashed to the sidewalk under a load of wet snow. Garrison was able to duck back into a doorway in front of Fern?s Portrait Studio on Second Street before the full force of the falling marquee struck him. The marquee had been attached to the Hixson Building, formerly the Opera House, at Second and Seward.
APRIL 21, 1950-Trevor Davis was elected Commodore of the Juneau Yacht Club when the club met last night in the Iris Room of the Baranof Hotel. Bob Coweling was elected Vice Commodore and Ruth Blake was selected as secretary. Jack Burford, the outgoing Commodore, was elected financial Secretary and Earle Hunter was elected Treasurer. Wayne Johnson and Clara Van Wert were named to the board of trustees.
APRIL 28, 1950-Elton E. Engstrom was installed as president of Svalbord Lodge No. 33, Sons of Norway, last night at Odd Fellows Hall. Other officers are Brent Mork, vice president; Gertie Berggren, finance secretary; Harold Snaring, social director; Mrs. Gundrun Olson, treasurer; Harold Swanson, recording secretary; Carl Hagerup, assistant secretary; Mrs. John Lowell, marshal; Mrs. Elton Engstrom, assistant marshal; Sig Olson, counselor; Frank Olson, John Lowell and Brent Alstead, trustees; Sig Jackson, inner guard; Pete Hildre, outer guard; J. O. Rude, doctor.
JANUARY 6, 1951-Mrs. Pauline Washington was unanimously elected to the City Council at the regular meeting last night, replacing Al Zenger who resigned effective January 1. She received the next highest vote in the city election last fall and is the first woman to sit on the City Council here.
