The 297-mile trek from Juneau to Ketchikan can be a little daunting for younger kids. Not any longer! Kids 12 and under start with a shorter trek from Juneau to Gustavus—just 83 miles—with 4 checkpoints along the way to keep the momentum going.
- Douglas | 3 Miles: Just getting warmed up.
- Auke Bay | 12 Miles: You’re qualified with your first ticket in the Jr. Trekker prize drawing.
- Echo Cove | 40 Miles: Nearly half way there and you’ve doubled your chances to win with 2 tickets in the drawing.
- Hoonah | 69 Miles: Bonus checkpoint! Submit a photo when you get here for a bonus ticket.
- Gustavus | 83 Miles: You made it to Gustavus! You earned 5 tickets in the drawing and get a free finisher’s t-shirt*!
If you finish the Jr. Trekker, you can continue on to Ketchikan and be eligible for the same benefits as the original Walk Southeast challenge.
A Few FAQs
You can be! First, complete and submit the Jr. Trekker challenge and then you can continue on the trek to Ketchikan and receive all the benefits of the original challenge.
To be eligible for the Alaska Airlines drawing for 2 round-trip tickets you must walk, run or hike a minimum of 150 miles between May 1 – September 1.
There is only one method to track miles—an old-school paper tracker! The link to download and print the tracker is in your confirmation email.
You will check off one box for each mile you walk, run, or hike between May 1 – September 1. Pro tip: use a free tracking app on your smart phone (we like Runkeeper) so you know how far you walked.

Yes, we have an amazing prize for one lucky Jr. Trekker! To qualify for the drawing, you must walk a minimum of 12 miles and submit your tracker no later than September 2.
If you walk further, you can earn more chances to win:
- 12 miles to Auke Bay = 1 ticket
- 40 miles to Echo Cove= 2 tickets
- 83 miles to Gustavus = 5 tickets!
There are two ways to submit your tracker: online or in-person. Click the link below to upload a copy of your tracker or drop it off in-person at Juneau Parks & Recreation, Ketchikan Wellness Coalition, Sitka Parks & Recreation or Petersburg Parks & Recreation.
Trackers, regardless of how far you made it, must be submitted by 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 2 to be eligible for the prize drawings.
Use the ‘Submit Your Tracker’ button to upload a copy of your completed Jr. Trekker tracker and get instructions on receiving your t-shirt. It will vary depending on where you live.
Juneau residents will need to pick up their t-shirt at Juneau Parks & Recreation office located at 1208 Glacier Ave. The office is open 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and closed on holidays.
Shirts sizes and quantities are limited. You don’t have to wait until September to submit your tracker, you can send it in once you reach Gustavus.
