The 297-mile trek from Juneau to Ketchikan can be a little daunting for younger kids. Not any longer! Kids under 12 can participate in a shorter trek from Juneau to Gustavus—just 89 miles—with 4 checkpoints along the way to keep the momentum going.
- Douglas | 3 Miles: Just getting warmed up.
- Auke Bay | 12 Miles: You’re qualified! You’ve earned your first ticket in the Jr. Trekker prize drawing.
- Echo Cove | 40 Miles: Nearly half way there and you’ve doubled your chances to win with 2 tickets in the drawing.
- Hoonah | 69 Miles: Claim your free Jr. Trekker t-shirt for your hard work.
- Gustavus | 83 Miles: Congratulations! You’ve earned the maximum 5 tickets in the drawing.
A Few FAQs
No, Jr. Trekkers are not eligible for the Alaska Airlines drawing for 2 round-trip tickets. But, don’t despair; Jr. Trekkers have a prize drawing just for them!
There is only one method to track miles as a Jr. Trekker—an old-school paper tracker!
Trackers will be emailed out to registered participants by April 30 (or at the time of registration, if after that) and can be downloaded and printed. Then check off one box for each mile you walk, run, or hike between May 1 – September 1. Pro tip: use a free tracking app on your smart phone (we like Runkeeper) so you know how far you walked.

Yes, we have an amazing prize for one lucky Jr. Trekker! To qualify for the drawing, you must walk a minimum of 12 miles and submit your tracker no later than September 2.
If you walk further, you can earn more chances to win:
- 12 miles to Auke Bay = 1 ticket
- 40 miles to Echo Cove= 2 tickets
- 83 miles to Gustavus = 5 tickets!
If you walk, run, or hike to Hoonah—that’s 69 miles—you’ll earn a free Walk Southeast Jr. Trekker t-shirt!
Don’t forget to submit your tracker by September 2. Shortly thereafter, shirts will be available for pickup in Juneau, Ketchikan, Petersburg, and Sitka. A small delivery fee will be charged for shipping to other destinations.
