Full Description

During the afternoon of November 7th, from 3 to 4 pm, children are invited to the City Museum to participate in a Red Cross Pillowcase Project, a preparedness education program for children in grades 3 ? 5, which teaches about personal and family preparedness, local hazards, and basic coping skills. Students are led through a ?learn, practice, share? framework, and receive a sturdy pillowcase upon completion of the program in which they are encouraged to build their personal emergency supplies kit at home. The presentation is customized to focus on a hazard that is important and relevant to our community.

The New Orleans chapter of the Red Cross originally developed this curriculum after Hurricane Katrina and, with the sponsorship of the Disney Company, it has expanded to include 60 Red Cross regions, covering most states in the U.S. and in Puerto Rico. The Global Disaster Preparedness Center is also working with Disney support to expand the program internationally.

Participation in the Pillowcase Project is free but pre-registration is encouraged to confirm a spot, as space is limited. Please contact the Museum to sign up. If there is enough interest, additional programs will be scheduled to accommodate.
