Eufrasia T. Carrillo

I was born in Aklon, Philippines, in 1930. I married Joe Carrillo, an American citizen, in February 1954, in Numancia, Aklon, Philippines. After our marriage, my husband returned to Juneau, Alaska, and filed my application for an immigrant visa. After nine months, I was approved to enter the United States in November 1954. The travel to Alaska was an adventure knowing how cold it would be. It was my first time to travel by air and it was scary. It took three days to arrive in Juneau from Manila.

In July 1956, my first son was born and in March 1958, my second son. In 1960, I took a job with the Alaska Dept. of Vital Statistics. This was my first office job and I was very excited. I continued to advance my positions with the State until my retirement on December 31, 1986.

Juneau is a pleasant town to live. People are very friendly and you almost know everyone in town. Taking a walk even after ten p.m. is nothing of fear. I got involved with volunteer work with St. Vincent de Paul, the Roman Catholic Church in town and the Diocese of Juneau. I have continued to live in Juneau ever since I arrived. I am a member of the Filipino Community.

I took some subjects from community college such as typing, shorthand and bookkeeping. My education in the Philippines as a Bachelor Degree in Education helped me a lot for getting a good job in the government.

As previously mentioned, I had married Joe who had died in 1982, leaving two sons, Bayani and Ernest.
