Kerry Kirkpatrick has been a painter all her life. She began painting as a child and continued to master the use of watercolor for over 30 years. After graduating from the University of Washington with a degree in Landscape Architecture, Kerry moved to Alaska where
she started a landscape and graphic design business, began commercial fishing, and continued to paint. Being on the water and having time to travel in the offseason afforded Kerry a freedom to paint in many places. In the last couple of years, commercial fishing has become a smaller part of her life while painting has continued to grow.

Kerry loves the simplicity of watercolors but found the medium to be limiting. So in 2020 Kerry began working with oil paints. Capturing the Light is a collection of new watercolor, acrylic and oil paintings. The inclusion of oil paintings in this exhibition allowed Kerry to explore what she calls “a more expressive medium,” and to stretch what she knows as an artist. In Kerry's words, "This exhibition captures on canvas a moment of beauty in the light on the water, shadows in the trees, and colors in a sunset or a sunrise."

Kerry's artwork is a celebration of where she lives, " I am so captivated by the constantly changing landscape of Southeast Alaska. Tide, weather, time of day, and my own response to it. I have stared at reflections in water; always in motion, shifting shadows and backlighting that frame or obscure landscape elements. I think my work speaks of my love for this place. ”
