Large Indian Canoe Visits Harbor

OCTOBER 19, 1895-Heavy rains during the past week did considerable damage to both the Silver Bow Basin and Sheep Creek roads. The various mining companies have crews at work now on repairs.

Work has been started to turn the Hub billiard hall into a theater. Proprietor Harry Ash announces that he will have a full bill of plays and variety entertainment during the coming winter.

The Schmeig lode claim in Silver Bow Basin will be offered at public auction on October 28. James Schmeig, druggist, died in 1892 and this is a part of his estate. The claim was located for him by Joe Juneau and Dick Harris on October 10, 1880.

A large hole in the street at Fifth and Gold has been repaired by filling it with brush which was then covered with gravel.

H. J. Davys has drawn the plans and perspective for the Episcopal Church.

M. Beltzhover and Percy Pond yesterday returned from a trip to the bar bringing in 64 ducks to attest their skill with shotguns.

OCTOBER 26, 1895-A very large and fine specimen of the Indian canoe was seen in the harbor today. It is gracefully proportioned and the prow is ornamented by an elaborately carved bear?s head.

The play ?Saved from the Wreck? is drawing crowds at the Opera House this week. It is produced by the dramatic company headed by Richard M. Maurettus.

The Nowell mill in Silver Bow Basin will continue to run for at least six weeks and possible for two months longer. A large supply of ore from the Ground Hog mine is on hand and mining is continuing.

The two Sintz gasoline engines installed at Sheep Creek for the Alaska Improvement Company are a great success.

The heavy rains of the past month have raised the waters of Gold Creek and brought down an unusual quantity of sand and gravel. To prevent this from obstructing his wharf at the foot of Main Street, Captain Carroll is running a line of piling between the wharf and the mouth of the creek.

The Juneau Mining Company is closing down its mill in Silver Bow Basin after a very satisfactory first season?s operations.
