Glory Hole Floods at Treadwell

FEBRUARY 11, 1895-The safe in the barroom of Winn Bros. in the Opera House building was robbed of $1,150 early Thursday morning after the bar had closed at 2 o?clock. In addition to some loose change, the safe contained two sacks of coins which were used in the faro game. One held $1,000, the other $150 and both belonged to James Winn, Gus Bakke and Thomas Wilson.

At midnight on Thursday the dam at the ditch above the Treadwell mill gave away and the water rushed into the Glory Hole, flooding the shafts and tunnels. The mine and mill were shut for two days while the water was pumped out.

The Northern Pacific Express Company will establish an office at Juneau about the first of March. Express parcels may then be sent to any port in the United States. This will be a great convenience to our residents who now have no ways or means of sending small parcels.

The Douglas City Dancing Club will hold a masked dance on the 22nd at Kane?s Hall, with supper to follow at the Yukon Hotel. The ferry will make extra trips from Juneau for the occasion.

FEBRUARY 18, 1895-Ed Webster received six of the new Bell compact telephones in the City of Topeka.

FEBRUARY 25, 1895-High winds have brought several large icebergs from Taku into the channel and some of them are threatening the docks and have broken a number of small boats from their moorings. There is talk of blasting some of the larger bergs into pieces.

A movement is afoot to revive the Juneau Brass Band.

Twenty young ladies of Juneau have organized a Ladies? Industrial Society. The president is Mrs. D. McGillvray and meetings will be held each Wednesday afternoon. The main objective of the club is to teach sewing and fine needlework.

The Alaska Treadwell Gold Mining Company has made a change of a half an hour in its time so the difference between Treadwell and Juneau is now only half an hour. Since the company started up many years ago it has kept its clock an hour ahead of those in Juneau.

The Happy Hour Club will hold a dance at the Court House Saturday evening.
