JANUARY 22, 1891-Col. William Winn has leased the Wheelock dance hall building on the waterfront and in future his gracious smile will illuminate those spacious halls.

W. I. Wright and T. F. Reynolds are hard at work on their treasure Box lode claim on Salmon Creek. Their tunnel is in 112 feet.

JANUARY 29, 1891-It has been learned that money has been appropriated for the construction of a court house in Juneau, with space for a jail and for the Customs office. The building will be 45 by 90 feet, two stories high, and it will be built on the government reserve which was formerly occupied by the Navy.

On Wednesday evening the Douglas City Literary Society gave an entertainment in the Martin and Olsen Hall. It was well attended. The program included recitations, declamations and a debate.

Oscar Ashby has taken over the lease of the Wheelock building room Col. William Winn and the latter is moving to the Opera House.

Seward Post No. 36, Grand Army of the Republic, has elected new officers.

FEBRUARY 5, 1891-The Juneau Chamber of Commerce, organized several months ago, has a fairly large membership but has been very inactive. Plans are being made to revive it.

The owners of the ferry Julia are building a landing for the vessel near the foot of Main Street.

FEBRUARY 12, 1891-Miners are getting their outfits together and ready to leave for the Yukon. There is no question but that it is a rich gold region and many expect a big strike to be made there sooner or later.

The boy and girls of the Juneau school have organized as the Wide Awake Society and meet every Thursday evening.

On Saturday night there will be a Valentine?s masquerade ball at the Phoenix Music Hall.

?The Japanese Wedding? will be an attractive feature at the Opera House Saturday night and is being put on by the ladies of Juneau. Proceeds will be donated for the building of a church.

The steam launch Katy arrived from Sitka this week with her owner, George M. Landerking. He will either sell her or put her on the ferry route between Juneau and Douglas Island.
