The goal of a fire investigation is to determine where and how a fire started. This process involves conducting interviews, collecting evidence, and preparing detailed reports of the findings. To do this effectively, fire investigators follow established procedures for crime scene management, interviewing techniques, and fire science analysis.
If evidence of criminal activity is discovered during the investigation, the Fire Marshal’s role expands to identifying those responsible and supporting criminal enforcement actions. In these cases, the Fire Marshal works closely with the Juneau Police Department to investigate the incident, develop the case, assist with criminal charges when appropriate, and provide testimony during prosecution proceedings.
