2026 CBJ July 4 Holiday Closures and Reminders

City and Borough of Juneau offices will be closed on Friday, July 3 in observance of the Independence Day holiday. Normal business hours, which are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, will resume on Monday, July 6. Other facilities and services will have the following availability:  

 Services:  

  • Juneau Police Department Officers and Public Safety Dispatchers are available 24/7 all year. Administrative offices will be closed starting Friday, July 3 and re-open on Monday, July 6.  
  • The Recycling Center will be open on Friday, July 3 but closed on Saturday, July 4. Household Hazardous Waste will be closed both July 3 and July 4. 

Facilities:  

  • Dimond Park Aquatic Center will be open 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Friday, July 3 but closed on Saturday, July 4. Augustus Brown pool will be closed both July 3 and July 4. Both pools will re-open with regular hours on Sunday, July 5.  
  • Juneau Public Libraries will be closed Friday, July 3 and Saturday, July 4. All libraries will re-open with regular hours on Sunday, July 5. The Valley book drop will remain open on July 3 and 4, while the Downtown and Douglas book drops will be closed until Sunday, July 5 at 12 p.m.  
  • Juneau-Douglas City Museum will be closed through the weekend starting Friday, July 3. The museum will re-open with regular hours on Monday, July 6.  

Roads:  

  • The Douglas Fourth of July Soapbox Derby for Kids will take place on July 3 and 4. Starting July 3 at 4 p.m., St. Ann’s Avenue from Summers Street to 3rd Street will be closed to vehicular traffic until 9 p.m. on July 4.  
  • The Juneau Fourth of July parade will begin at 11 a.m. on July 4 at the Department of Labor building on West 8th Street. From 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., several streets in downtown Juneau will be closed to vehicular traffic. “No Parking” signs in these areas will be in effect from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.  
  • The Douglas Fourth of July parade will begin at 2 p.m. on July 4. Starting at 1:45 p.m. and ending when the parade is over, Douglas Highway will be closed at Capital View Court. “No Parking” signs on 2nd, 3rd, and 4th streets will be in effect.

Harbors:  

  • The Statter Harbor, Auke Bay, office will be open 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Friday, July 3 and Saturday, July 4. Statter Harbor field staff can be reached after hours at 907-321-0935 or VHF Radio.  
  • The Port Field Office will be open 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Friday, July 3 and Saturday, July 4. Dock field staff can be reached after hours at 907-321-4926 or VHF radio. 
  • The Port Director’s Office will be closed Friday, July 3. 
  • The Aurora Harbor Office will be closed Saturday, July 4. Aurora field staff can be reached after hours at 907-321-1115 or VHF radio. 
  • The Douglas Harbor launch ramp will be congested due to the holiday and use of the ramp may be restricted. 

Don’t forget that personal fireworks are not permitted on the Downtown Seawalk or any CBJ-owned waterfront property.

Regular Planning Commission Meets June 23, 2026 — Here’s How to Weigh In

The Regular Planning Commission meets Tuesday, June 23, 2026, at 6 p.m. in the Assembly Chambers. This meeting will be to discuss a State Project Review for construction of a modified intersection, a Non-Administrative Variance to reduce a rear yard setback, and a Non-Administrative Variance to increase the maximum height of an accessory use structure.

State Project (CSP2026 0001) 

Applicant requests a State Project Review for construction of a modified partially signalized intersection at Egan Drive and Yandukin Drive. 

Non-Administrative Variance (VAR2026 0001) 

Applicant requests a Non-Administrative Variance to reduce the rear yard setback from 10 feet to two (2) feet in an Industrial zone to build a storage building with a caretaker unit.  

Non-Administrative Variance (VAR2026 0002) 

Proposed Non-Administrative Variance to increase the maximum height of an accessory use structure from 25 feet to 28.46 feet in a D3 zoning district to build a new accessory use structure for the receiving, uncrating, integration, pre-assembly, and staging of electronic communications equipment before deployment to remote sites.

Capital Transit Summer Service Begins May 4

Schedules and routing for Capital Transit’s 2026 summer season will go into effect Monday, May 4 with service changes, extended hours, and temporary route suspensions.  

Timepoints for some stops on all bus routes have changed. Check the new schedules to avoid missing your bus at juneaucapitaltransit.org/schedules or Transit Directions in Google Maps. 

Capital Transit’s Token Transit app can be used to conveniently purchase bus fares and passes from your phone. Visit juneaucapitaltransit.org/fares to learn more and download the app.  

Routing Changes 

  • Route 1 Downtown / 4th Street – Buses will not go up to the Cedar Park bus stop in the evening. As an alternative, please board the Route 1 Douglas bus at Cedar Park at :24 minutes after the hour, or at the Douglas Highway stop opposite Cordova Street at :37 minutes after the hour. 

Service Additions 

  • Route 8 Valley / Downtown Express – Weekend hours will be added, approximately 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. 
  • Sunday Core Service (Route 1, 3, & 4) – Hours will be extended to approximately 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. 

Temporary Suspensions Until Further Notice 

  • Starting Monday, May 4, the 6:45 a.m. run of the Route 9 Downtown Egan Express from the Valley Transit Center will be suspended. Please use the following as alternatives: 
  • Route 7 Lemon Creek / Downtown service departing the Valley Transit Center at 6:45 a.m. 
  • Route 9 Downtown Egan Express from the Valley Transit Center at 6:25 a.m. or 7:15 a.m. 
  • Starting Monday, May 4, the 7 a.m. run of the Route 8 Valley Express from the Downtown Transit Center will be suspended. Please use the following as alternatives: 
  • Route 4 Mendenhall Valley from the Downtown Transit Center at 6:40 a.m. 
  • Route 3 Mendenhall Valley from the Downtown Transit Center at 7:10 a.m. 
  • The Route 6 Airport Connector service is suspended as of Monday, April 20 through this summer.

Corrected Property Assessment Notices with Senior Citizen & Disabled Veteran Exemptions to be mailed March 30 

The City and Borough of Juneau (CBJ) Office of the Assessor identified an issue affecting approximately 300 property assessment notices mailed on March 18, 2026 which did not reflect the relevant Senior Citizen & Disabled Veteran exemption. This error is related to an ongoing software conversion and has been since resolved. Corrected notices are expected to be mailed out the week of March 30, 2026. Affected property owners will have 30 days from the date of mailing the corrected notice to file a petition for review of their assessment.  

Petitions for review can be submitted electronically using the online review form available at juneau.org/finance/assessor-forms. Any errors or omissions must be reported to the Assessor in writing by this deadline. If you have questions about your valuation, please contact the Assessor Office at 907-586-5215 or [email protected]. Staff are here to assist you in any way to ensure your petition is filed and received.  

Once the form is filled out and supporting documents are assembled, please use one of the following methods to submit it:  

  • Fax to 907-586-4520  
  • Drop off the physical form and supporting documents at one of the CBJ drop boxes located at SuperBear IGA in the Valley, Foodland IGA downtown, or in the Assessor Office located at 1208 Glacier Ave (new location at 1208 Glacier Avenue). Parking is available on 12th Street.

Update: CBJ Recycling Center Closes Thursday, January 22

The City and Borough of Juneau (CBJ) Recycling Center will be closed tomorrow, January 22 to continue handling mechanical issues and clearing the high volume of recycling materials received. The Recycling Center will re-open but close early at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, January 23 and Saturday, January 24.
