Reminder: no personal fireworks allowed on downtown Seawalk July 3
The City & Borough of Juneau (CBJ) invites residents and visitors to enjoy the community’s annual July 4 fireworks display on the Downtown Seawalk the night of Thursday, July 3 (show launches at 11:59 p.m.). With several thousand spectators expected, please keep in mind that personal fireworks are not permitted on the Seawalk or any other CBJ-owned waterfront property.
“The Seawalk is a beautiful but narrow timber boardwalk packed shoulder-to-shoulder on July 3,” said Harbormaster Matt Creswell. “A single spark or mis-fired mortar in that environment can injure people and ignite the wooden structure. Please help us keep the evening fun and safe by leaving the fireworks to the professionals.”
What the ordinance says
- CBJ 36.80 & 67.01.090(m) prohibit the use of fireworks on CBJ property, including the Downtown Seawalk. Violations carry a $250 fine for a first offense (and $500 plus a mandatory court appearance for subsequent offenses).
- Outside CBJ property, fireworks use is limited to private land during specific hours only (see below). The Seawalk sits inside the Fire Service Area, so concussive fireworks (mortars, large shells) are always prohibited there.
Permitted fireworks hours on private property
Fireworks may be used on private property on Thursday, July 3 from 10 a.m. – 11:59 p.m. and on Friday, July 4 from midnight – 1 a.m. and 10 a.m. – 11:59 p.m. Fireworks are not allowed between the hours of 1 a.m. and 10 a.m.
Remember, concussive fireworks – like mortars – can only be used on property outside the Fire Service Area. All other fireworks may be used inside the Fire Service Area. but must remain on private property.
Safety & enforcement on July 3
- Docks & Harbors, Capital City Fire/Rescue, and the Juneau Police Department will have officers, firefighters, and harbor personnel patrolling the Seawalk throughout the evening.
- Anyone lighting personal fireworks on the Seawalk will be asked to extinguish them immediately and may receive a citation.
- Open flames (including charcoal grills) are also prohibited on the Seawalk’s wooden surface.
Tips for an enjoyable night
- Arrive early and consider walking, biking, or using Capital Transit—parking is limited.
- Dress warmly; coastal winds can be chilly after sunset.
- Keep pets at home; loud noises and crowds can be stressful.
- Pack out what you pack in—let’s keep our waterfront clean.
CBJ, Docks & Harbors, CCFR, and JPD appreciate the community’s cooperation in keeping the Seawalk a safe place for everyone to celebrate. Enjoy the show—and let the experts handle the fireworks!
