APRIL 16, 1898-Since the breweries in Juneau closed down by order of Collector of Customs, J. W. Ivey, three saloons have suspended business.
The First National Bank of Juneau opened its doors for business yesterday in the Horseshoe Building on Main Street at the end of Front.
Chief Johnson is offering for sale his new residence on the south edge of town. The house is 24 by 44 feet, two stories, and the lot measures 100 by 200 feet.
APRIL 27, 1898-Charles Goldstein has secured the Armory Building at Second and Franklin Streets and is fitting it up as a grocery store which he will open on May 1.
The harbor has been crowded with shipping during the past week as vessels bound to or from Skagway and Dyea now generally call here. Among the vessels noted this week were the George W. Elder, Wigwam, Willamette, Discovery, Kodat, Farallon, Pak Shan, North Pacific, Alliance, Al-ki, Rosalie, Queen, City of Topeka, Islander, Cottage City, Morgan City and Pilgrim.
Frank Bach has retired from the Juneau & Douglas Telephone Company and Ed Webster is now the sole owner.
MAY 4, 1898-The Last Chance Gold Mining Companies has temporarily suspended operations on its Last Chance Basin property. Its drainage tunnel was wrongly located in consequence of an error in the survey.
The Treadwell and Mexican Gold Mining Companies have declared their regular dividends - the former 37 1/2 cents a share, amounting to $75,000; the latter, 10 cents a share for a total of $18,000.
MAY 11, 1898-District Court is now in session at Sitka and in consequence a great many Juneau people ? jurors, litigants and witnesses ? are absent from town.
MAY 18, 1898-Dr. Jennie Morrison has opened a dental office on Seward Street just above Second.
The British steamer Capilano called here Sunday enroute to Pyramid Harbor where she will unload cattle and horses to go over the Dalton trail to the Yukon.
The new residence being erected by Henry Hile on Main Street is rapidly nearing completion.
The former Nowell Gold Mining Company is now known as the American Gold Mining Company.
