MARCH 3, 1897-The purchasers of the old Campbell property in Silver Bow Basin, more recently known as the Lane and Hayward property, have incorporated under the name Alaska Juneau Gold Mining Company. Henry Pichoir is president; Thomas Mein is vice president; and W. W. Mein, Robert Duncan, Jr., and Joseph Mooser are directors.

The Alaska Treadwell Gold Mining Company reports for January that it milled 20, 235 tons of ore and treated 423 tons of sulphurets. Bullion shipments amounted to $58,722. The average yield was $2.90 per ton of ore. The Alaska Mexican Gold Mining Company milled 10,572 tons of ore and treated 147 tons of sulphurets, making bullion shipments of $27,170. Working expenses were $20,644.

There are 52 pupils in the government school, ranging from tots to young ladies and gentlemen, and there is only one teacher. The citizens ought to hire another teacher on their own if the Bureau of Education fails to do so.

Mr. Carlson, proprietor of the Troy Hand Laundry, and Mr. Benefiel, who has been in the employ of E. R. Jaeger at the Juneau Steam Laundry, have purchased the Cascade Steam Laundry on the waterfront.

Robert Duncan, Jr. and J. P. Corbus, both with the Alaska Treadwell Gold Mining Company, have purchased a half interest in the Juneau Ferry & Navigation Company. Other stockholders are F. D. Nowell and C. E. Tibbitts.

MARCH 10, 1897-For some time the Treadwell Company has issued green cardboard checks, worth $2 each in trade at its store but also used in general circulation on both sides of the channel. Local merchants were startled to learn this week that some of the checks have been counterfeited and the counterfeits circulated locally. The bogus checks are a little lighter green than the genuine ones and the signature of Superintendent Duncan is poorly reproduced.

MARCH 17, 1897-The Opera House has been sufficiently repaired so that the play ?Nugget Nell? could be opened there this week.

The electric light plant at the Silver Queen Mine on Sheep Creek will be completed next week and will generate 75 horsepower, sufficient to run the mill and lights for it.

Present rates from Seattle to Dyea on the steamer Mexico are $20 first class; $14 second class; freight $9 a ton, horses $20 and dogs $2.50 each.
