All Saloon Keepers Arrested

MAY 20, 1895-The new uniforms for Hose Company No. 1 have arrived. They consist of a shirt, belt and cap. The shirt is red flannel with collar and sleeves faced with black stain and adorned with brass buttons. The leather belt is inscribed ?Hose No. 1.? The cap is of blue material with a band and braid and a patent leather frontpiece.

MAY 20, 1895-The Alaska Bottling & Vinegar Works has opened its plant here and will soon place on the market the first lot of orange and sweet cider and ginger beer.

A benefit variety show was given at the Opera House Saturday night for the Fire Association. Net receipts were $300.

MAY 23, 1895-J. J. McGrath?s new building at the corner of Second and Seward Streets is nearly finished. It measures 30 by 70 feet, two stories high. The upstairs will be used as a meeting and dance hall.

Several small schooners and sloops have left Juneau for Cook Inlet, each with a load of miners bound for the new discovery on Turnagain Arm. The steamer Chehalis also took 20 miners for that place.

MAY 27, 1895-Considerable improvement has been made around the school house on Seward Street. Drains have been put in, stumps removed, and some grading done.

The Alaska Treadwell Gold Mining Company report for March shows that 18,655 tons of ore were milled and $43,730 worth of bullion was shipped. Of this, $17,856 came from 344 tons of sulphurets. Expenses were $23,275, leaving a profit of $20,455 for the month. The ore milled ran $2.35 per ton.

MAY 30, 1895-John Timmins has been found guilty of assault with a dangerous weapon in the shooting of Frank Howard and has been sentenced to jail in Sitka.

JUNE 10, 1895-All the local saloon keepers have been arrested and placed under $500 bond each. A test will be made in District Court regarding the validity of the prohibition law in Alaska. Saloons raided include the Opera House, Club, Casino, Senate, Arctic, Hub, B. & M., Nevada, Montana, Missouri, Horse Shoe and Mayflower. The B. & M. Saloon, owned by Butler and Macinson, had just opened in the new building next to the hub when the raid came.

Work is going forward at the Bennett-Aurora mine in Silver Bow Basin and the ore is being transported to the Nowell mill for reduction.
