Pinkerton Detectives Nab Former Treadwell Employees

AUGUST 9, 1894-Two Pinkerton detectives who have been in the employ of the Alaska Treadwell Gold Mining Company have solved at least some of the company?s losses from its chlorination works. Two men, former employees, have been arrested near Killisnoo and about $1,600 in gold precipitates have been recovered from a cache there. It is estimated that between $10,000 and $12,000 has been taken from the works and it is believed some of it may be cached near Douglas.
AUGUST 16, 1894-One of Juneau?s two weekly papers, The Alaska News, published by Carpenter and Ward, has moved into the new McGrath Building on Front street.
An additional $7,000 in precipitates have been found near Killisnoo and brought here.
Five 2,000-candlepower electric lights are being placed on the Nowell tram towers at Silver Bow Basin. They will enable work on hydraulic diggings to continue at night and two shifts will be put to work. Electric lights will also be installed at the Ground Hog mine above the Basin.
Oliver Fontaine has bought the steamer Lone Fisherman from C. W. Young and will use her to tow logs from his camp on Admiralty Island to the sawmill.
The sawmill at Douglas, owned by the Alaska Treadwell Gold Mining Company and leased by Robert Purvis, burned to the ground early yesterday morning with a loss of $7,000 and no insurance. About 20,000 feet of dressed lumber also burned. The Treadwell company plans to rebuild the mill at once.
AUGUST 23, 1894-William Ebner?s mill is running steadily on ore from the Bennett mine.
President T. S. Nowell of the Berners Bay Mining Company states that the capacity of the mill will be doubled with the addition of 20 more stamps.
Jack Avery has leased the Takou Consolidated mine from Willis Thorp and has 21 men at work there.
Superintendent Duncan of the Treadwell mine states that Ernesto Hahn, a principal stockholder of the company, has an option to erect a mill on the Ready Bullion and Golden Chariot lode claims located east of the Mexican mine.
Marcus J. Cohen, proprietor of the Juneau Brewery, is preparing to open the Star Brewery at Douglas.
