Auks Defeat Chilkats in Canoe Race

JULY 5, 1894-The People?s Wharf company has been incorporated for $20,000 by Captain Thomas Fisher, C. E. Tibbetts, E. Valentine, C. W. Young, Willis Thorp, the Harrison brothers and J. F. Malony. The wharf will be built with two approaches ? one from the foot of Seward Street and one from Front Street. It will be 40 by 100 feet and the approach from Front Street will also give access to the ferry float. Mr. Young is president of the company and Mr. Tibbetts will be the manager.
JULY 12, 1894-Archie Campbell has made a clean-up of $2,800 from a 29-day run of his five-stamp mill and also has a quantity of concentrates which will be shipped south.
The Nowell mill on Gold Creek is running steadily on ore from the Aurora mine.
The Auk crew which was defeated by the Chilkat crew in the Fourth of July canoe race challenged the Chilkats to another race over the same course. It is understood that the stakes are high and each side is putting up 250 pairs of blankets. That makes the total around $2,000. The race will take place in 10 or 15 days.
The Alaska-Mexican Gold Mining Company reports on operations for the 31 days of May as follows: Ore milled, 6,250 tons; bullion from the mill, $15,591; sulphurets treated, 100 tons, yielding $3,181. Working expenses were $12,472.
F. C. Hammond has completed a three-track gravity tramway about 900 feet long at the Silver mine and it is a complete success.
JULY 9, 1894-Archie Campbell now has a crew of Indians breaking rock for his five-stamp mill. His rock crusher recently broke down and he sent to San Francisco for a new one.
Laughlin and Stravin have completed a building on the waterfront opposite Decker Bros. store to be used for a machine shop. The building is 24 by 50 feet and will be fitted with a lathe, drilling machine and other equipment.
Koehler & James, local merchants, have opened a branch store on the trail below the Chilkoot Pass.
William McLernon is taking out ore on his Little Queen mine on Sheep Creek and will ship it to the Tacoma smelter.
The two new wharves, Carroll?s and People?s are nearing completion.
