MARCH 2, 1893-Nelson Brothers are refitting their store at the corner of Second and Seward Streets in preparation for entering the drug business.

MARCH 9, 1893-An inauguration reception and dance was held at the court house on Friday evening, March 3, marking the inauguration of President Grover Cleveland in Washington. Receipts of the evening were donated to the Juneau Fire Association.

M. J. Cohen was elected president of the Juneau Fire Association at a meeting on March 6. He succeeds John Olds. B. M. Behrends was elected secretary and Frank Reed was named treasurer. Reed reported $76.49 in the treasury.

MARCH 16, 1893-A citizens meeting was held Monday evening to discuss a reorganization of the Juneau City Fire Association into the Juneau City Fire Department. A committee was named to draw up by-laws and an organization plan.

School was dismissed yesterday at School No. 1 because the Taku wind caused the stove to smoke so badly that nobody could remain in the room.

Frank Bach of Douglas has leased the Yukon Hotel in that city from Hugh Day.

Grace Calhoun, Mollie Goldstein, Mrs. Charles Coon, Frank Lawrence, Belle Goldstein, W. J. Best and Mr. Kelsey presented the program at the last meeting of the Longfellow Literary Society.

Pete MacDonald arrived on the last boat from below bringing a span of horses which he will deliver to Jack McQuesten at Fortymile. These will be the first horses ever taken into that part of Alaska.

Willis Thorp has leased the Takou Mining & Milling Company property and intends to run the mill this season. The property has operated two seasons out of the past five.

Local businessmen are calling attention to the fact that there is a good trail to the headwaters of the Yukon River via the Taku River and that this is a more practical route than from the head of Lynn Canal.
