Tsimpsian Jugglers Appear at Opera House
News of the Gold Camp - 06/27/1980
MARCH 6, 1891-Word has been received that there has been a reorganization of the management of the Eastern Alaska Mining & Milling Company during a meeting of the directors at Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Mr. Depue is apparently no longer superintendent of the mine which last year operated its 10-stamp mill on ore from the Jumbo lode. Farther down Gold Creek, it is hoped that the Coulter mill will operate this season. It was closed last year because of discord in the company. Archie Campbell will make some improvements in his Dodge mill on the Fuller First and plans run it this year. And with the litigation settled between owners of the Dora and Humboldt claims, it is anticipated that both will be mined this season.
APRIL 2, 1891-The Alaska Secular Union and Humanitarian Society will meet at the court house tomorrow evening.
The steamer Al-ki has been loading some of the machinery from the famous Bear?s Nest property on Douglas Island and will take it below. A part of the 80-stamp mill is understood to have been sold to Dr. Reynolds, owner of the Silver Queen mine on Sheep creek and will be moved to that site.
APRIL 9, 1891-At the Juneau Opera House may be seen two magnificent oil paintings titled ?The Ring? and ?The Stage.? The former represents the contest between Dempsey and Fitzsimmons in which Dempsey was defeated in the last round. ?The Stage? shows two ladies in stage costume. They are by F. M. Page who has also painted a new drop curtain which represents the famous ?Lost Rocker? gold mine and a fine painting of the Silver Bow Basin in winter. He has been visiting here for several weeks and goes to San Francisco on the next boat.
Tomorrow night at the Opera House ?The Wizards of the Northwest? will make their first appearance in Juneau. The troop consists of four Tsimpsian Indians who do juggling and sleight-of-hand tricks. They have met with great success before audiences in California and Oregon.
