Five US Senators Visit

JULY 25, 1889-The U. S. Bureau of Fisheries ship Albatross, Lt. Commander Z. L. Tanner in charge, arrived on the 20th with a party of five U. S. Senators on board. Their principal interest was investigating the condition of the Indians of Alaska but a general meeting was held at the courthouse so the views of local residents could be heard.

W. W. Fisk has opened as assay office in the building next to John F. Malony?s law office on the waterfront.

Joseph Farnsworth, formerly in charge of tunnel work at the Alaska Mill & Mining Company at Treadwell will be in charge of the long tunnel for the Nowell Gold Mining Company in the Basin.

AUGUST 1, 1889-Richard Harris has been prospecting at Berners Bay and Joe Juneau in the Wrangell area but neither has found anything worth locating.

Fresh beef is very scarce in Juneau. Many vessels have been in port the last two weeks and have exhausted the supply.

Douglas City is to have a money order office in the new future and is ahead of Juneau in this respect.

AUGUST 8, 1889-Captain Pierce is having new machinery placed in his steamer, the Dispatch, and when she is ready he plans an excursion trip to Glacier Bay. The Dispatch can accommodate 25 persons comfortably.

Work at the Bear?s Nest has been shut down and the men laid off. Some of them have found pick and shovel work on placers Silver Bow Basin. It had been reported that the Bear?s Nest ledge had been reached at about 1,100 feet but this proved false. The tunnel is now in 1,400 feet and no sign of the ledge.

Heavy rains have caused slides on the hillside south of town, damaging several cabins and other buildings. Part of the Basin Road has also washed out.

Henry Coon is having an addition built to his residence at Third and Main Streets.

AUGUST 15, 1889-J. S. Shillaber received on the Corona a cuff, collar and shirt ironer for his laundry.

M. A. Hammell of Hammell & Nelson has disposed of this interest in the firm to the Nelson brothers, under which name the business will henceforth be conducted. The store is a Second and Seward Street.
