JANUARY 24, 1889-A large number of citizens met at the court house on Saturday evening, the 19th, to hear Governor A. P. Swineford. He spoke in glowing terms of the future prospects of Alaska and lauded the pioneers who are settling here. Due to the change in administration at Washington, the governor will doubtlessly be replaced.

J. J. Calhoun is building a residence on the west edge of town near Dr. Reynold?s dairy ranch. Dr. Reynolds received on the Ancon a number of milk cows for the ranch and at the same time Willis Thorp brought up a number of beef cattle for the local market.

During the coasting on Seward Street there have been several casualties. William Nelson was struck by a sled and his leg was severely fractured. Mr. Frank E. Howard ran into a stake and split his upper lip.

JANUARY 31, 1889-For the convenience of their passengers, Messrs. Fisher and Haley are building a wharf at Douglas where they will dock their ferry boat, the Julia. They will also build a wharf at Juneau and will place a float next to the Treadwell wharf.

G. W. Garside is now in Washington D. C., attempting to get the townsite laws extended to Juneau and Alaska.

FEBRUARY 7, 1889-Benjamin Behrends, manager of the Sitka Trading Company store here, was a passenger to Sitka on the Idaho.

A snowslide in Snowslide Gulch struck Captain Carroll?s mill and completely wrecked the building. The machinery is apparently undamaged.

The Boston Alaska Mining Company is erecting a building on Third Street near Seward to be used as an office.

FEBRUARY 14, 1889-There is now quite a settlement in the Sheep Creek Valley, with several new buildings under construction.

The night shift in the Bear?s Nest tunnel has been discontinued because of bad air.

The boys at Douglas City are talking of organizing a brass band.

FEBRUARY 21, 1889-The second story of St. Ann?s Hospital building is now being fitted up for accommodation of patients.

W. C. Antisell has leased a building on Seward Street and will open an assay office. A complete outfit arrived for him on the mail steamer Ancon.
The masquerade ball at the Opera House on Valentine?s Day has been pronounced a great success.
