SEPTEMBER 27, 1888-Two new furnaces are being placed in the Alaska Mill & Mining Company chlorination works on Douglas Island.

Dr. V. McAlpine, dentist, has opened an office next door to the Alaska Mercantile & Packing Company store.

Professor G. B. Johnston, who was fired by the School Board but reinstated by the Commission of Education, has decided not to continue teaching here and will open a law office. Miss Rhoda A. Lee has arrived to take charge of Juneau school No. 1. We call the attention of the Territorial Board of Education to the need for a school for white children at Douglas. There are now 25 to 30 children ages 6 to 15 in that growing community. At present a mission school is operated by the Quaker Missionary Society for Indian children.

OCTOBER 4, 1888-The steamer Julia, now running between Juneau and Healy?s Post at the head of Lynn Canal, brought in 26 Yukon miners on her last trip. It is reported that about 125 miners will return to Juneau to spend the winter.

The parts necessary to put the air compressor at the Bear?s Nest back in running order were received on the Ancon.

OCTOBER 11, 1888-The ladies of Juneau and Douglas have arranged to hold a fair for the benefit of St. Ann?s Hospital. The fair will be held in the old P. Brady store building on Second Street in Juneau, commencing on October 17.

OCTOBER 18, 1888-John F. Malony has moved his law office into the Stanford Building on Third Street.

W. F. Reed has in his store about 100 bushels of rutabagas raised by Peter Erussard on his ranch near town.

On Douglas Island the Mexico property is being developed by Charles F. Depue of the Eastern Alaska Mining & Milling Company. He is studying the possibility of carrying electricity across the channel from Sheep Creek to run a mill.

The firemen?s dance tonight at the Opera House will honor the 21st anniversary of the transfer of Alaska to the United States. Proceeds will go into the Fire Association fund.

OCTOBER 25, 1888-The firm of R. S. Belknap & Co., candy manufacturers, has been dissolved and in the future Mr. Belknap will conduct the business himself.
